Each April is autism acceptance month, those of us on the spectrum need to keep advocating for those who do not have a voice, to be their voice.

I've gotten some dark threats just for liking candy corn. Some people take the food wars thing too far, especially for people not wanting to be involved.
I'm okay personally with lighthearted joking with folks I know. But I've met some MEAN people who use it to justify outrageous bullying and said I deserve to get bullied.

When my husband & I first started watching Miraculous Ladybug, we were sure it was just going to be utterly ridiculous and not worth continuing. Well, we continued & the show gets DEEP. We got soooo hooked we've rewatched it three times now, and there's plenty of seasons left to be made still. It's also very inclusive, especially season 6. 🌈

I just had an idea I’d like to share with the @actuallyautistic community:

August could be a new Autism Acceptance Month, by and for #Autistic people, with no harmful messaging usually spread during April.

Plus, “August” and “Autistic” both start with “Au”, the chemical symbol for gold, a colour often used to oppose Autism Speaks’ blue campaign, along with #RedInstead. (Plus, gold is opposite blue on the colour wheel, too!)

This April, I'm lighting it up #RedInstead to counter #AutismSpeaks' "Light it up Blue" campaign. Autism Speaks has a horrible history of:

• Supporting Applied Behavioural Analysis (abuses #Autistic children to make them "normal");
• Endorsed the Judge Rotenburg Center which the UN condemned for torture;
• Use most of their budget for lobbying and researching ways to "cure" autism;
• Have ad campaigns calling #Autism a "burden" and a "disease".

#ActuallyAutistic

So for #AutismAcceptanceMonth:

• Support organisations ran by and for #Autistic people, like the #AutisticSelfAdvocacyNetwork (#ASAN);

• Do not discriminate against autistic people – accomodate, listen, and understand their needs;

• Don't support Autism Speaks or use their puzzle piece symbolism or the colour blue;

• Opt for #RedInstead, #LightItUpGold, and red/gold/rainbow infinity loops, the symbol of neurodiversity;

and most importantly:

• Listen to and uplift #ActuallyAutistic voices!

This #AutismAcceptanceMonth, as an #ActuallyAutistic person, I'll be lighting it up #RedInstead in protest of #AutismSpeaks.

They have a history of harmful messaging of #Autistic people being "costly burdens", and that #Autism is an "epidemic" that needs to be "cured".

#RedInstead counteracts the #LightItUpBlue campaign of #AutismSpeaks, and empowers #Autistic people everywhere that we are not burdens, we are not "puzzles" to be "solved", and there is nothing wrong with us! #ActuallyAutistic
