Red-eared Slider (Wild Animals by Papo)
In 1992 the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were at the height of their popularity and like many young boys of my generation, I was obsessed! To the point where my vast toy collection wasn’t enough. I wanted a real turtle, and shockingly enough my mother obliged me. He was a red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans), a sub-species of the pond slider native to the mid-western United States, […]

A Turtle’s Journey
I think this might be a Red-Eared Slider (Trachemys scripta elegans), I'm not absolutely sure certain though. It is my first guess. I asked Copilot to identify the species and Copilot also said perhaps a red-eared slider.
As I've mentioned, I have a gallery of my favorite photos at:
https://swede1952-photographs.pixels.com
Go there and take a look. Prints are for sale along with other doodads and I suppose it is kind of a business for me. But it's the kind of business where I don't care whether I sale anything or not. If you want something, by all means you are welcome to make a purchase. But I just want you to visit and maybe mark your favorites or leave a comment. Cheers 😄

How and why temperatures determine the sex of turtles? https://phys.org/news/2023-06-temperatures-sex-turtles.html
Higher temperatures directly increase germ cell number, promoting feminization of #RedEaredSlider turtles https://www.cell.com/current-biology/fulltext/S0960-9822(23)00758-3
"Warmer temperatures make more #turtle eggs become female hatchlings... those females also have a higher capacity for egg production, even before their sex is set. This may explain why many #animals besides #turtles have temperature-dependent #SexDetermination"

Red-eared sliders or red-eared terrapins (Trachemys scripta elegans) at the Pool in Central Park. Also, just a bit of duckweed.

Here's another take on one of these beautiful little turtles. I just love the red on their faces; they're so charismatic!

I've had this guy on the back burner for like a month? Two months? It's been too long. I just really wanted to paint a turtle.
I have two versions of this: one with line art and one without. I can't decide which one I like better. The whole painting process ended up being quite an adventure, and I'm considering repainting it.
