Glad you asked! This is a deep background feature that's an Easter egg in all the Reluctance Series stories.

Plastic does not exist, nor do fossil fuels. Instead they use organic compostable material and things like wax. As a result, other than glass, there is no transparent packaging, only translucent. Everything is made from wood, wood by-products, natural fiber, metal, vegetable oils, glass, rock, minerals, cement, and ceramic. What they rely on for energy instead of electricity does allow the creation of some exotic materials, but nothing that can't be rendered down and reused. Electronics don't exist, despite it being an Interstellar civilization. When you visit a grocer, you either buy containers or bring your own. A grocery is a combination of bulk bins you'd find in a bulk store, a produce market, and shelves stocked with bottles, tins, cans, and boxes. Cooked or prepared food will be wrapped in wax paper or Chinese-style folding boxes (typically for takeaway meals), or foil wrapped. Takeaway drinks come in paper, sometimes waxed. Pure water is free, spigots are ubiquitous, and everyone carries a metal or water-proof fabric flask. (It is horribly hot by our standards so everyone sweats; water is a health issue.) Even clothing is reducible; rayon, silk, and rarely leather versus our nylon. People routinely clean discards; everything is rendered and reused. People do that work to earn coin.

Reusable containers and objects, and recycling, are never detailed in the stories other than in passing. You might see someone washing something before tossing it, or opening a Chinese-style folding box (instead of a styrofoam clamshell) and pulling chopsticks from their hair to use them. It might seem like a colorful detail, but it is part of a world free of human created forever-trash.

Editorial Note: It amazes me how even the most recyclable packaging will contain some tiny bit that isn't recyclable: cellophane or a plastic transparent covering, or plastic bits inside caps, for instance a plastic spout in a glass vinegar bottle. Spray cans used to be metal, even the top and sprayer. Even consumer friendly stores that routinely work with suppliers to produce unique products, for example Trader Joe's, repeatedly market new items in completely non-recyclable packaging that could obviously be made recyclable if they insisted. Cheap, easy, and irresponsible end-of-life handling will eventually render the Earth into a rubbish heap. We should be holding packaging companies responsible for end-of-life disposal cost (arguably the material's greatest expense). Such pressures would force them to invent reusable recyclable packaging. /End of editorial.

This #eBike Doesn’t Need a Battery

A French inventor has created an e-bike that runs on a #supercapacitor rather than a #LithiumBattery.

"#AdrienLelièvre, has recently engineered a sustainable solution to power the e-bike boom. According to Euronews, Lelièvre 'designed and patented an e-bike called #PiPop, which doesn’t use lithium batteries but supercapacitors.'

"Lelièvre told Euronews, 'The system gets charged when the ride is easy and when the bike brakes—thanks to engine braking—the energy is given back when needed.'

"So, what exactly is a supercapacitor?

"A supercapacitor essentially stocks up energy in the form of a slow-moving charge, which can be released when needed. A battery stocks up energy as a chemical reaction. This means that the bike is constantly stocking up energy when ridden on easier terrain, and then using that energy when going uphill, in the form of an assist.

"According to TS2, 'Supercapacitors, which have been around since the late 1970s, offer several advantages over lithium batteries. Rather than relying on the consumption of natural resources like #lithium or #RareEarthElements, supercapacitors store energy through electrostatic means. This allows them to stock and release energy quickly, providing instant assistance to riders when needed.'

"Unlike many other e-bike manufacturers, Pi-Pop also uses #recyclable materials such as #carbon, conducting polymer, #aluminum foils, and pulp, thus avoiding the need for rare earth elements in its production.

"#TS2 reports that 'the longevity of the Pi-Pop sets it apart from traditional e-bikes. While lithium batteries typically last five to six years, the supercapacitors in the Pi-Pop are projected to have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years. This prolongs the bike’s usability, reducing waste and minimizing the environmental impact associated with battery disposal.'

"Another perk to the Pi-Pop bike is that there’s never a need to charge it when it’s stationary. You’ll never hop on the bike and realize you forgot to charge it up.

"Euronews reports that according to Lelièvre, 'We can’t innovate if we lose control of production. When we talk about sustainable development, ecological transition, and energy transition, we need to provide the jobs.' Lelièvre’s company employs 25 people.

"Pi-Pop currently produces 100 bikes per month. And moving forward the company aims to produce at least 1,000 bikes per month in 2024."

Reduce e-waste - increase #privacy - save money.

Before you chuck out that old (android) phone no longer supported by the manufacturer, consider diverting it from landfill AND take a big step forward in de-googling your life by flashing a third party ROM to it!

It is not as hard or techy as it sounds. My old Samsung S10e was on Android 11 and no longer getting updates. Now, it is running a de-googled (ie, it does not phone home) Android 14 and gets fortnightly updates. MUCH better ...

I also bought a new battery online for AUD$80 and swapped the old one out. Now I have a phone that looks and feels new, and holds a charge much longer than before due to the vast reduction in telemetry reporting.

If I can do it anyone can. :-)

Hint - a degoogled phone and Linux on the laptop comes in mighty handy when the viruses and spy-ware are written for Windows and Android.
