  1. New #IUI2025 paper.

    When people are denied a benefit by an algorithm, they should have access to #recourse. The most common approach is to offer a counterfactual explanation, eg: you would have gotten the loan if your credit score was 20pts higher. Counterfactuals seem attractive because they tell the person exactly what to do. But if circumstances unknown to the algorithm make that one course of action difficult, then other forms of explanation become a better choice.
