David Bowie - Earthling

When @buffyleigh was going through the entire Bowie discography and she came to this album I realized I had never really listened to it. Outside of the “hit” (I’m Afraid of Americans). So I listened to it once through on YouTube and knew I wanted it on vinyl.

I seem to remember it was sorta written off as Bowie trend hopping—NIN, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy. But Bowie has always been someone who has absorbed the zeitgeist and made it his own. This album has held up incredibly well. While you can hear those late 90s influences, it doesn’t sound dated at all.

Gang of Four - Songs of the Free

Going with some deep cut Gang of Four. This is a favorite of my partner; a record from her teen years that she shared with her dad. Is there nostalgia for this era of GoF? This record seems so overshadowed by the first 2 records, and fans at the time were very critical of the more slick production. (I know because I was one.) But, damnit, it's a really good record in retrospect. Great lyrics, a cool fusion of post-punk and club music.

Shriekback - Oil and Gold

Another trip down memory lane with this recent score from Turn It Up! in Brattleboro, #Vermont. This was in heavy rotation when I lived with my brother and his wife in Boston. It was a record we could all agree on. Even saw Shriekback on this tour I believe. Holds up well. The drum production is very 80s. But in hindsight they were very much ahead of their time. The UK band that did the Sopranos theme, Alabama3 (or A3 as they were sold in the US), essentially lifted this whole vibe for their blues/gospel/edm mashup; the vocal style is almost 1 to 1. Also big choruses sung by a choir of people would define a lot of post-90s music.

On a vinyl collecting note, while some collectors like keeping on shrink wrap, especially if there are “hype” and/or record store price stickers on it. I’m not one of them. If it’s an interesting hype I may try to transfer it to a poly outer sleeve. Record store pricing stickers, meh. But this. Sounds was a shop I frequented a lot—*a lot*—in the 90s. At that time I was buying CDs, but still a lot of nostalgia in that sticker.

There’s a few criteria I have for collecting a complete vinyl discography:
- Not too vast; like less than 10 records
- Most of the releases are affordably priced
- Open Mike Eagle records

This is his newest record. First time listening; waited until the vinyl arrived. Does not disappoint. I dig his voice so much.

Hot Chocolate - Man to Man

Holy shit, J! When this came up on Discogs with "Make Offer" on a $24 listing price I doubted that this was in fact Mint. My offer of $20 was accepted and a week later was holding this still-sealed copy of the third Hot Chocolate record.

I can't thank you enough (well, I can't thank you at all😒) for getting me listening to Hot Chocolate. They are absolutely one of my favorite new old bands. As you explained to me, they are so much more than a funk act (which is plenty mind you); you can hear psychedelia, British Invasion, pop ballads influences in their songs. Just a truly slept upon 1970s era band.

Giant Sand - Center of the Universe

Back in the early-mid 90s I went through a huge Giant Sand phase. They were absolutely my favorite band. Since I was in NYC I saw them like 5 times, at various venues around the City (and Maxwell's in Hoboken). This was the height of the CD era so I had to track down their discography as such. Then I kinda lost interest. Joey & John went on to form Calexico (who are one of my favorite bands), and I didn't really follow Howe's later incarnations of the band. But in my late middle age revisiting all the music of my youth I've got a few of my favorite Giant Sand records from that era of the band; the first I found in the wild, the others, including this, I've gotten from Discogs.

The second disc is a live set from the Vermontress Festival Sub Pop put on in Burlington Vermont in '92!

The Cars - Shake It Up

Inspired by Tony Hawk's recent "What's In My Bag?" I pulled this out. Funny, I don't think of playing this album when I feel like listening to The Cars. The first and second lps are the ones I grew up with. So someone saying it's their favorite Cars album is an interesting perspective. But, yeah, it's a really good record, even if the lyrics can be pretty goofy. But they've always had some goofy lyrics, even on those first 2 records. Nevertheless, I've had the complete Cars discography for a while; it's not hard--they all exist in great abundance and the later ones especially won't really set you back financially. But, for me, diminishing returns on Cars records after this.

Hot Chocolate - S/T

Beginning to dig into the Hot Chocolate discography. This is 100% attributable to J. Back when he was posting his daily #vinyl listening, he posted a Hot Chocolate record, and I responded, ah, thats so cool, I haven’t thought about that band in years. He quickly responded, you gotta get on that Puffer. And that first batch of records he sent me included a copy of their Greatest Hits. Since his death I’d acquired there first record, Cicero Park, and now this, their second, self-titled record. They’re both so very good. Great records in fact.

I wish J were still around to elucidate why Hot Chocolate are so remarkable. This is the kind of stuff he was so effortlessly good at talking about. But I did find this somewhat over-excited piece in the resurrected Creem, and, yeah, it’s true.

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these. I just scored this. I forget who from Mastodon reminded me of this. @Defiance or @TheVinylApe maybe. I remember seeing this around for so many years but my nostalgic listening habits inspired me to throw it on my Discogs want list.
