Various Artists, The Vinyl Series Volume One, 2021 on Island
Great collection of Reggae / Ska / Rocksteady singles from the early days of Island Records, said to be hand-picked by label founder Chris Blackwell. There's already been a Volume Two and Volume Three (going into the 70s) - not sure if there will be more or not. Somewhat idiosyncratically includes The Spencer Davis Group alongside Toots & The Maytals, Desmond Dekker & The Aces, and The Soul Sisters - but it makes sense in the context of the original releases which also stood side by side at […]https://goatless.org/2026/05/26/various-artists-the-vinyl-series-volume-one-2021-on-island

The Cure, Hang On a Second, 2023 on Mind Control
Another bootleg claiming to be from an FM broadcast, this one features The Cure at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle Washington, from October 21, 1984. (It's actually from October 23rd, 1984 as the night of the 21st was cancelled). As is common with these, it has been widely released and said to be an FM broadcast, but I can't determine where it actually was broadcast, if ever. Great versions of "Charlotte Sometime," "10:15 Saturday Night," and "Let's Go To Bed." My copy—via The Record […]https://goatless.org/2026/05/23/the-cure-hang-on-a-second-2023-on-mind-control

The Cure, I Hear No Sound: Live at De Melkweg, Amsterdam Dec 12, 1979, 2024 on Dear Boss.
Live bootleg from late 1979, right before recording Seventeen Seconds. De Melkweg - you can find some of the same show on the Internet Archive: The Cure Live - 1979-12-12 Melkweg, Amsterdam, Netherlands. Melkweg is a music venue in Amsterdam on the site of a former dairy (Melkweg means "Milky Way" in Dutch). Not sure (like many Dear Boss recordings) if this ever actually was an FM broadcast or just claims to be to avoid copyright issues. My copy—via The Record Exchange in Salem […] -

Norah Jones, Day Breaks, 2016 on Blue Note
Sixth studio album from Norah Jones, and the only one so far I've managed to locate on vinyl (I've been looking). Produced by Eli Wolf and Jones, and recorded in Brooklyn, this LP has Jones going back to the piano driven vocal-centric approach of Come Away With Me. Wayne Shorter shows up on four songs playing soprano sax. Includes a great cover of Neil Young's "Don't Be Denied" as well as Horace Silver's "Peace" and Duke Ellington's "Fleurette Africaine." My copy—via the Record […]https://goatless.org/2026/05/05/norah-jones-day-breaks-2016-on-blue-note

Bob Dylan & The Grateful Dead, Dylan & The Dead, 1989 on Columbia
Recorded live in July 1987 during the six-city tour of that summer. While the shows from that tour typically had a first set of Dead material followed by a set with Dylan, this recording highlights the Dylan songs with the Dead serving as a backup band.
Got some harsh critical reviews a the time as a kind of commercial sellout record for both, I think it stands up really well and I was excited to find a good vinyl reissue.
My copy—via the Record Exchange in Salem—is a 2018 reissue pressed at Memphis Record Pressing.

U2, Live “Under a Blood Red Sky, ” 1983 on Island
I always thought of this as recorded at Red Rocks in Colorado, but with additional tracks from the Orpheum in Boston (“11 O’Clock Tick Tock”) and Rockpalast in Germany (all of Side B, “I Will Follow”).
There was a live video – Live at Red Rocks: Under A Blood Red Sky, which was the full Red Rocks gig – may be why I’ve always confused the two.
This is one of the records I keep multiple copies of. Early pressings included a 5:18 version of “The Electric Co.” that includes Bono interpolating some lyrics from “Send in the Clowns” – these were removed from later pressings due to rights issues, resulting in a 4:51 version of the song. (CDs and reissues also use this shorter version).
This copy, via the Record Exchange in Salem MA, is a Specialty Records Pressing with the longer “The Electric Co.”. (My other copy with the shorter “The Electric Co.” is also a Specialty Records Pressing but with metal work from Allied).

SVT, Extended Play, 1980 on 415 Records
San Francisco / Bay Area new wave / rock band including Jack Casady and (my former colleague) Nick Buck (from Hot Tuna) with Brian Marnell and Paul Zahl (who replaced founding drummer Bill Gibson, who went on to be in Huey Lewis and the News).
This was out of print for a long time but was reissued on CD in 2005, and a reissue of all of SVT’s work (“Always Comes Back – The Authorized Recordings”) was recently reissued in 2020 on Liberation Hall.
My copy via Aux 33 Tours in Montréal Québec. A bit surprised (but happy) to find a rare-ish Bay Area record in francophone Canada. I’ve since scored a second copy locally as well at the Record Exchange in Salem.

Steve Earle, Someday, 1987 on MCA
12-inch single with a presskit from 1987 – after the March 1986 release of Guitar Town. This was the second single from the debut album – including a live cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “State Trooper.”
My copy—via the Record Exchange in Salem MA—also included a one page Rolling Stone feature on Earle, but not I’m not sure if that was part of the original press kit or added by an earlier owner.
I’m a bigger fan of later Steve Earle than I am of these early records, to be honest, but I love seeing the early origins of his talent and how they tried to shape it into 80s radio markets.
