"disability news, crip-time-sensitive interviews, and hyperfocus-focused/associative tunes woven through it all."

@ozeng
That was my privileged choice. 👍Nothing I can do about #NBN , #Optus, #Immi, Education Directorate failing to enforce policy or make #ReasonableAdjustments for #SpecialNeeds students, next to nothing I can do about mistreatment in #AgedCare, getting #CleanAir in workplaces, (the list goes on)
But having to jump through hoops for the pleasure of trying to find barcodes to scan - at last, something I can can.
-
I believe I’m temporarily exempted from this new policy while they try to find someone at the Ministry of Health whose job it is to match rare diseases to acceptable #ReasonableAdjustments.
-
Instead, we could make it a ‘reasonable adjustments’ request. This has the added bonus of being much more complicated and invasive and involving annoy a thousand people. Also, it requires (I kid you not) approval from the Ministry of Health. At least, so my manager tells me.
So she’ll get right on that … just as soon as she can figure out who at the MoH she needs to call in order to ask about my rare diseases that even my GP has never heard of.

This is a really long, detailed report from Ofqual into the remote invigilation of exams and assessments invocational training.
It's so disappointing to see this line in the report:
"This research did not include candidates who required reasonable adjustments. Therefore, potential issues that relate to how such adjustments would interact with RI processes and systems cannot be discussed in depth within this report."

All you people guessing that the answer would be some euphemistic form of no have clearly not spent enough time navigating the murky waters of corporate BS.
No is a final answer.
Bureaucracy doesn't do final answers. It just mires you in layers upon layers of red tape until you get fed up and stop asking the question.

Employee contracts aren’t something they deal with or can help with. But if I need a more ergonomic desk, they’d be happy to help with that.
I said in my request what #ReasonableAdjustments I was looking for.
They could have replied to say that wasn’t something they were able to help with.
They could have said they’d be happy to help with XYZ, but don’t get involved in employee contracts.
There was zero need to waste my time with this assessment.
-
This morning, we did the assessment.
At the end of the assessment, what did she say? Any guesses?
-
To recap…
I used the form to request ‘reasonable adjustments’ at work. In my request, I said I was looking to move to a permanent work from home contract due to my health condition.
They said they’d need to do an assessment.
Lots of faff about the method of completing the assessment.
-
And yes, I specifically asked if the request could be handled via a different form of comms. They said no, all assessments must be done over the phone or else the request would be cancelled.

Message to all educators....
If there's a student (child or adult) who is often late attending their classes, or getting to school...
Please don't tell them off and punish or ridicule them as a knee-jerk reaction.
Dig deeper
The fact that they've turned up at all will usually be a strong indication that they've tried very hard to get there.
They could have difficulties with:
- Some of their executive functions (organising, planning, time management, prioritisating, working memory)
- Anxiety about certain aspects of attending school/college/uni (bullying, social interaction with students/teachers who don't understand their communication differences, differences in learning styles)
- Difficulties at home
- Poor sleep
- Difficulties with home environment
- PovertyPlease be curious, gentle and explore their reasons why they're late and work with them.
We often don't see the immense effort the person, and their families go through, just to get them there 5 or 10 minutes late.
To sum up....
Be kind, aporoachable and non-judgemental....both to the student and their caregivers.
To paraphrase Dr Ross Greene,
A person does well if they can.

Can anyone tell me the legal position regarding a secondary teacher not allowing a student to go to the toilet during a lesson - in the UK.
Specifically for Autistic children who have been given passes to leave the classroom but have forgotten their pass?
