  1. The observation station off Cape Hatteras, NC, collected data about #coastal #currents that influence the #weather & commercial #fisheries along the US East Coast.

Mike Muglia, professor of coastal studies at East Carolina University, used the data to understand waves, currents & sea life for a marine #RenewableEnergy test site in Nags Head, NC, that was funded by the #Energy Department.

  3. The #ocean observation system began operating in 2016 & was expected to continue for 25 years. Jim Edson, a marine meteorologist who led the Ocean Observatories Initiative, called it “the world’s most advanced continuously operating ocean observing systems.” When it was first proposed, the #science foundation said it was important to have a long-term presence at scientifically important sites in the #Atlantic & #Pacific oceans.

  5. …Craig McLean, who was the acting chief scientist at #NOAA during the first #Trump term, said the move was part of a pattern in the Trump admin.

“This reflects the further lack of understanding that the current administration has of scientific value & scientific merit,” Dr. McLean said. “By dismantling such a system, we push the United States back yet again into a rear seat in global scientific leadership.”

  7. The station in the Irminger Sea has been key to understanding changes in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Current [#AMOC], a global conveyor belt of water that some scientists are concerned may be weakening as a result of #GlobalWarming. A collapse of the current could have severe #weather effects.

A friend had this. Wonderful, smart and generous woman, a former CPA, hiker, bike tourer, and Master Gardener, who scored 100 on her written test. I volunteered with her, and these past two years I helped her work her gardens.

This is a terrible disease for anyone, but for her to be unable to speak what she KNEW, was cruel.
She was brave and clear that no intervention was to be done.

She knew any prolonging, would only lead her to total care. Incredible woman.

"PPA is a condition caused by a neurological disease that gradually affects a person’s ability to use and understand language. Sometimes speaking is also difficult. PPA begins slowly and worsens over time. This is different from aphasia from stroke or injury. Many people with PPA say: “I can’t remember words” or “I can’t put sentences together well anymore" It’s helpful to think of PPA as a progressive “access” issue... "

  11. Total Synthesis of Pleurotin (JACS Au, Y. Q. Long 2024)

Pleurotin is a benzoquinone meroterpenoid that was first isolated in the late 1940s. Since that time, several total syntheses of this compound have been reported. Recently, Ya-Qiu Long and his team from Soochow University (#China) published a novel synthetic route in the journal JACS Au.

  13. The Genomic History of the Bronze Age Southern Levant

We find that Levant-related modern populations typically have substantial ancestry coming from populations related to the Chalcolithic Zagros and the Bronze Age Southern Levant. These groups also harbor ancestry from sources we cannot fully model with the available data, highlighting the critical role of post-Bronze-Age migrations into the region over the past 3,000 years.

  15. Evidence for dynastic succession among early Celtic elites in Central Europe

The historical and archaeological record leave no doubt that the development of culture and population in southwestern Germany was temporarily characterized by profound discontinuities, particularly during the third to first century BCE. The definitive end of the 2,000 years of relative genetic continuity from the Bronze throughout the Iron Age in southern Germany is marked by a sudden, sharp increase of Steppe-related ancestry during the Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages.
