part of it is that, of course, jets are cool. the other part of it is that i am fascinated by alternate earths in this way (i'm basically writing one myself). AC as a series is only vaguely interested in the politics of the setting, which is a disappointment, but occasionally there are glimpses of some #RealShit mixed in there
