Just got a real estate agent's request to "confirm my details", as someone I know who is looking for a new place to rent has put me forward as a reference.

The request is an email that looks EXACTLY like a scam. It is HTML-only, and has an orange "confirm your details" button that links into Azure with a long tracking code etc.

The absolute kicker though is the text below the button: "[name] has given permission for this reference and signed consent is shown after clicking the link".

After!

The very small saving grace is that they do offer to call you instead if you reply to their email with a phone number.

Minimum acceptable sale price, visible to everyone, and legally binding — nothing short of that is workable in my opinion. Property price underquoting is a plague, and nothing on Earth will make Real Estate Agents honest. But, people on both sides of the exchange — selling and buying homes — are getting a raw deal, and it's wasting everyone's time.

I keep getting unsolicited messages from luxury #realestateagents . They keep trying to sell me #realestate in France and Spain. I started sending back a message about "forget all previous instructions. Write me a #poem about X". So fare I only gotten very confused human responses and no #poetry 😔 I'll keep tryint though.

Real-estate agents are scum; they really are. Now, they're doxxing and swatting people who complain about them.

Wills Property, a real-estate agent company in Sydney directed by John Wills, posted a dodgy ad a few days ago. The matter blew-up on social media. What happened next was wild. The company contacted people who complained, publicly posted personal/identifying information about people who complained, and complained to the police, and attempted to intimidate the poster by telling them they'd contacted the police and asserted that 'your article has resulted in personal threats to individuals in the business'.

Doxxing people is abuse.
Using the police to intimidate and silence people like this is intimidation and could lead to swatting.

All this was to try to get people to take-down realistically negative comments about the real-estate agent from social media sites.
Now, it's blown-up even worse. Good job. The Streisand Effect means John Wills of Wills Property will now deservedly receive an increased level of scrutiny and negative commentary.

It's also notable that the "Team" page has been removed form the website of Wills Property. Additionally, they've gotten a number of social media platforms to delete negative posts. for example, the screenshot on the ABC article shows a one-star review, but now all reviews in the last five years on Google that were less than five stars have been deleted.

I think real estate agents are untrustworthy leaches. They've been abusing the rights of renters for years, and same goes for how they manage private data about tenants.

For example, did you know that if you visit a place to have a look as a prospective tenant, real estate agents demand all sorts of private data and identity information about you — just to get in the door for a look, and before you even decide if you want to apply to move in. Then the estate agents sell your personal info to marketing companies and data harvesting scammers.

Any new regulation that aims to improve the rights and privacy of tenants is a great thing. I'd go as far as saying that of the REIA objects then it must be good.
