  2. Judeo-Christian :fozzie_wocka_wocka:

"Among the many #faiths practiced by millions of #Texas #students, a new statewide required #reading list that includes #biblical passages draws from just two traditions: #Protestant #Christianity and #Judaism.

Yet Texas #rabbis say #Jews had no role in shaping how #Judaism appears in the #curriculum, and they disagree with how the lone #Jewish text is presented. Rather than teaching about Judaism on its own terms, they argue, the lessons filter Jewish texts through a #Christian perspective.

The #readinglist, which is expected to go into effect in 2030, will have #publicschool students across the state reading passages from the #NewTestament and mostly Christian #translations of the #Hebrew Bible alongside #literary classics. Of the curriculum’s six #HebrewBible readings, just one uses a Jewish #translation."

  6. Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation in 1838–1839

A fascinating account by British actress Fanny Kemble of her time on her husband Pierce Butler's Georgia plantation. Vehemently anti-slavery, Kemble recounts the horrors of this world + her feeble attempts to help - giving out bits of food + clothing, paying enslaved workers for work outside the fields + illegally helping one man to learn his letters. The book was not published until 1863, after her divorce from Pierce Butler, + the American Civil War had begun. Butler had threatened to keep Kemble from seeing her 2 daughters, whose custody she had lost in the divorce.

Years after the divorce Butler was forced to sell his slaves to pay off gambling debts. It was the largest such sale ever - known a The Weeping Time.

  8. Ah, the illustrious Marine Corps Commandant's 2026 reading list—because nothing screams "modern warfare" like a pile of dusty old books that commandants pretend to read 🤔📚. Who knew that winning future wars would require channeling your inner librarian instead of, you know, actual military strategy? 😂🔥

  14. The Canon of Absurdity: Market Demand for Existentialist Thought

Are existentialist books popular in 2026? Readers are choosing 20th-century philosophy to find personal meaning in a chaotic world.

  15. <https://pluralistic.net/2026/06/01/doikayt/#socialism-or-barbarism>

The Bund lost, but it did not fail. The Bund was failed, as were the Zionists, the Roma, European socialists, disabled and queer people – everyone the Nazis burned, gassed, or buried alive. These people cried out to the rest of the world – to America, to Canada, to the UK, to all the places that were not under Nazi occupation – and begged for help, for safe passage, for rescue.

The world slammed its doors. Even after they joined the war, they refused to admit Jews and other victims of Nazi genocide. They refused visas, closed borders, turned back boats of escapees, sometimes sending them back to occupied Europe to be slaughtered.

  16. ( I still don't get the right-angled triangle sides' worked solution in the appendix though.
I literally did a physics degree, somehow.
The step up to (x^2 - 1) > 2n or whatever is fine.
    Right after that looks like (x^2 + 1) - (x^2 - 1) > 2 from nowhere.
    Like wtf?
Did I just have a stroke.
Where the hell did that come from and go, fucker-eyed crow?)

  20. So I finished Tegmark's "Our Mathematical Universe" which was definitely not as annoying as Loeb's book, but I think that's because I kinda expect mathematicians to be total fucking weirdos.

"Our Mathematical Universe" is one of those books that has a few chapters that don't age well. There's bits near the end when Tegmark waxes about how awesome the Singularity will be, and haha oof, that shit probably sounded way more cool and exciting a decade ago.

The rest of it is kinda take it or leave it, like this all feels like semantics and general labelling issues right? Like, what is a particle? What stuff is a particle made of? What if it's ✨ made of math? ✨ Sure, why not? It's about as good as any other guess we have.

The unfortunate thing (for me) is that I've been exposed to stuff like this all my life, this isn't really *new* information for me, I'm familiar with the Copenhagen interpretation of QM, I'm familiar with the different varieties and levels of parallel universes, etc. I want something more.

And that's very much a 'me' issue, because really the only place to go from here is to university to actually learn particle physics or whatever, and I ain't got time for that. Would that I could just learn everything, but I can't, I learned all the superficial stuff, so now documentaries bore me.

Do I recommend "Our Mathematical Universe"? Eh. I guess if you want a discussion into some of the peculiarities of QM and parallel universes, sure? But I'd also read a lot of other books and watch a lot of other documentaries just to round things out, there's a lot of voices in this space.

One thing that I feel "Our Mathematical Universe" covers well is the phenomenon of being "scooped" while doing research, like hey, it happens. You could get palpitations wondering if you're The Very First with an idea, then casually read a 50 year old paper and realize that no, you are not.
