Reachy Mini's emotions are pre-recorded, so they can feel repetitive. What if it generated them on the fly instead? :)
A project I gave at ENSEIRB-Matmeca, built by my student Anaelle Jaffre. She mapped emotion with the PAD model (Pleasure, Arousal, Dominance) plus heuristics and randomness, so "anger" comes out different each time.
The result is a bit weird, but I like it a lot. All the cool stuff is Anaelle's work :)

Grumpy Reachy Mini :D
The prompt: a robot that wakes up confused about what it is and where it is, wanted to be a Mars rover, and is very disappointed to learn it is not. Irritable, but with a sense of humor.
Runs on the conversation app pipeline. The head wobble is generated live from the output sound: on/off by volume (with hysteresis), amplitudes scaling with volume.

"Sorry bro." "I'm not your bro, pal." "I'm not your pal, buddy." :)
I tried to out-stubborn Reachy Mini in the classic chain. The prompt told it to run all the classics, then once I ran out of ideas, to mock me and list every word I could have used instead, switching into languages we don't even speak. A crushing defeat for me.

New skills for Reachy Mini, the build that was on stage at TEDAI Vienna with improv comedians :)
New since last time:
- looks at a photo and reasons about it
- face tracking for eye contact
- wobble + tracking + emotions at once
- local face recognition + autonomous idle behaviorsRecorded on gpt_realtime, today it runs on our full open-source backend on Hugging Face!
Keep a toggle between voice and the old flute sounds?

Can GPT-4o give a robot feelings? :)
Coralie Deplanne and Anne-Charlotte Passanisi recorded 80+ emotions (motion + sound) by teleoperating Reachy Mini, true artists. Then we plugged in GPT-4o-realtime: it listens to my voice and triggers the emotion that fits.
The live test did not go as planned, but it was funny so I'm sharing it as is.

What happens if you attach a multimodal LLM to a small open-source robot?
Runs on Reachy Mini, or just in the simulator without the robot. You install it straight from the Reachy Mini dashboard.
My favorite profile so far: an infinitely patient teacher for kids. Big knowledge base, zero impatience.

Hugging Face’s Reachy Mini is an open source robot aimed at developers, priced at $299 and up
AI software company Hugging Face is now taking pre-orders for a small robot aimed at developers an folks learning to code. It’s called Reachy Mini, and it’s basically a programmable toy that sits on your desk and interacts with people around it by moving its head, rotating its body, or waving its antenna.
The robot comes in two versions: there’s a Reachy Mini Lite that costs $299 and which […]
