Death of #Heather #Preen: how 8 y/o lost her life amid #sewage crisis
When Julie Maughan was invited to help with #TV factual #drama focusing on #illegal dumping of #RawSewage by #water companies, she had to think hard.
In 1999, Maughan’s 8 y/o daughter, Heather Preen, had contracted the pathogen E coli O157 on a #Devon #beach and died within a fortnight.
Maughan’s marriage hadn’t survived the grief. She separated from Heather’s father, Mark Preen who later took his own life ...

Why? To be introduced to the smell of #rawsewage!
How did we get there? On dinky little #ferries along the #BrisbaneRiver.
There’s nothing like bobbing up & down for an eternity, thinking you’re going to sink & drown at any moment & then be assaulted by the stench of raw sewage.
I saw lots of #vomiting that day!

BBC uncovers 6,000 possible illegal #sewage spills in one year

"Every major English #WaterCompany has reported data suggesting they’ve discharged #RawSewage when the weather is dry – a practice which is potentially illegal.
"BBC News has analysed spills data from nine firms, which suggests sewage may have been discharged nearly 6,000 times when it had not been raining in 2022 - including during the country’s record #heatwave.
"Water companies can release untreated sewage into rivers and seas when it rains to prevent it #flooding homes, but such spills are illegal when it’s dry.
"The firms say they understand public concerns around dry spilling, but they disagree with the BBC’s findings.
"They have said the spill data shared with the Environment Agency was 'preliminary' and 'unverified', and also disagree with how the BBC defined a dry spill, which they say differs from the Environment Agency’s approach.
"The latest findings follow a BBC investigation conducted last year which found 388 instances of possible dry spilling in 2022 by three water companies - Thames, Wessex and Southern - after they shared their data with the BBC.
"The other six – Anglian Water, Northumbrian Water, Severn Trent, South West Water, United Utilities and Yorkshire Water - had refused to share data about when they might be spilling with the BBC. They said it could prejudice an ongoing criminal investigation by the #EnvironmentAgency (EA) and #Ofwat into their activities."

Untreated #sewage illegally pumped into #WindermereLake

May 15, 2024"Millions of litres of #RawSewage were illegally pumped into one of England's most famous lakes after a fault, the BBC can reveal.
"#UnitedUtilities failed to stop the illegal #pollution of Windermere, in the #LakeDistrict, for 10 hours in February and did not report the incident to the Environment Agency until 13 hours after it started.
"An almost identical incident occurred at the same location in 2022.
"The firm says it took urgent steps to resolve the incident in February.
"A pumping station in Bowness-on-Windermere, in Cumbria, normally sends sewage to Windermere Wastewater Treatment Works.
"But United Utilities documents, obtained by the BBC, show how a telecoms fault on the night of 28 February caused the main pumps to stop.
"A separate set of emergency pumps then discharged untreated sewage into the middle of Windermere, which is part of a Unesco World Heritage site.
"It is England's largest lake and one of the country's most popular natural attractions."
