  1. Primrose in drizzle and bad light at the fantastic Wiltshire Wildlife Trust reserve at #Ravensroost Wood yesterday morning. My first properly-wild primroses of the year. #SignsOfSpring #WildflowerHour #Wiltshire #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

  2. So this weekend #WildflowerHour asked for #SignsOfSpring and at #Ravensroost Wood I saw my first Goat Willow flowers of the year. If you think the branches are at an odd angle, you're right. Hedge laying had been going on and formerly horizontal branches were now vertical! #Wiltshire #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

  3. Day 5 of the 2025 #dragonfly #AdventCalendar. Large Red Damselfly is our first species to emerge in serious numbers, in April or even late March. It's not really spring until I've seen one of these. This one was at #Ravensroost Meadows #Wiltshire #WildlifeTrust reserve in May. #DragonflyAdventCalendar #invertebrates #ukwildlife #wildlife #insects #invertebrates #wildlifephotography #photography

  4. Day 3 of the 2025 #dragonfly #AdventCalendar. Four-spotted chaser, one of our commonest species and very easy to spot as the males fight over possession of ponds. They're one of several species that mate while flying, the female flying upside down and backwards! This one at my favourite #Wiltshire site, #Ravensroost Wood Wiltshire #WildlifeTrust nature reserve in June.

  5. Time for some more #Dragonfly action. Last weekend was a bit of a washout but earlier I got to my favourite #Wiltshire #WildlifeTrust nature reserve, #Ravensroost Wood. A Four-spotted Chaser, one of several fighting over possession of the meadow pond. #UKWildlife #invertebrates #photography #insects #odonata

  6. The #OrchidChallenge proved a bit tough this week - mainly seeing leaves not flowers. But #Ravensroost Wood is reliable for Common Spotted Orchid and the first few of them were out. Phew! #WildflowerHour #Wiltshire #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

  7. This was rather an exciting find. Common Spotted Orchid is common at #Ravensroost. Early Purple does turn up as well. Those are the only two orchids I've ever seen there. Until yesterday, when I was walking across the meadow to get to the pond and found a couple of Green-winged Orchid. #Wiltshire #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

  8. Finally it's #dragonfly season here in the UK! My first of the year was this male Broad-bodied Chaser who was dominating the larger of the meadow ponds at the #Wiltshire #WildlifeTrust reserve at #Ravensroost Meadows. I also saw lots of Large Red Damselfly at the pond, a decent number of recently-emerged Common Blue in the neighbouring woodland and an Azure Damselfly at a nearby site. Plus heard my first Garden Warbler of the year singing in the woods. What a day.

  9. Hazel catkins are big and showy, while the pink female flowers are much less conspicuous. My first of the year at #Ravensroost Wood on Friday. #Wiltshire #WildflowerHour #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

  10. Day 3 of the 2024 #dragonfly #AdventCalendar. Large Red #Damselfly is the first species to emerge each year in most of the UK. This mating pair was at #Ravensroost Meadows #Wiltshire #WildlifeTrust reserve, in early May. They usually first appear in April. #DragonflyAdventCalendar #invertebrates #ukwildlife

  11. There has to be Fleabane at this time of year. Even if there wasn't a #DaisyFamily challenge, the sheer diversity of insects it attracts demands respect. This one has a Sun Fly (sometimes called the Footballer Fly apparently because of the stripes!). In the newly-planted woodland between the woods and the meadows at #Ravensroost, #Wiltshire. #WildflowerHour #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

  12. Some meadow highlights from #Ravensroost on Monday. Cuckoo Flower, also known as Lady's Smock, and Field Wood-rush, also known as Good Friday Grass. very appropriate for the Easter weekend. #Wiltshire #WildflowerHour #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

  13. More #SignsOfSpring from #Ravensroost Wood #Wiltshire #WildlifeTrust reserve yesterday. This Goat Willow tree had been cut down during woodland management of the ancient woodland over winter, but it wasn't going to let a minor detail like that stop it flowering.

  14. This week's #WildflowerHour challenge was #SignsOfSpring so here are some from yesterday at #Ravensroost Wood #Wiltshire #WildlifeTrust reserve. The (tiny) pink female flower of Hazel, plus Blackthorn, Lesser Celandine and Primrose.

  15. Day 11 of the 2023 #dragonfly #AdventCalendar. Four-spotted Chaser is common, bulky and males are fond of fighting over ponds. Which makes them great to watch and a frequent food-source for hobbies. They also mate in flight, during which they're joined into a circle, with the female flying upside down and backwards. It's quite a sight. This male was at #Wiltshire #WildlifeTrust #Ravensroost Meadows in June. #DragonflyAdventCalendar #wildlife #insects #wildlifephotography #invertebrates

  16. Day 9 of the 2023 #dragonfly #AdventCalendar. Common Emerald #Damselfly. This is a newly-emerged male, with bright green colouring, no blue patches yet and the wing spots still very pale. Sadly these aren't as common in the UK as they once were. In the rest of Europe this would be called Common Spreadwing rather than Common Emerald. At #Wiltshire #WildlifeTrust #Ravensroost Meadows in June. #DragonflyAdventCalendar #wildlife #insects #wildlifephotography #invertebrates

  17. Day 4 of the 2023 #dragonfly #AdventCalendar Time for our first #damselfly and it's the Large Red, which is generally the earliest to emerge each year in April. This one was at the great #Wiltshire #WildlifeTrust reserve #Ravensroost Meadows, in early June. #DragonflyAdventCalendar #wildlife #insects #wildlifephotography #invertebrates

  18. Unsolicited Fleabane pic. My apologies that there's no hoverfly sat on it. There's supposed to be a hoverfly, but none of them wanted to play yesterday. At the #Wiltshire #WildlifeTrust reserve #Ravensroost Meadows. #WildflowerHour #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #plantscience #photography

  19. It isn't truly high summer until I've seen my first White Admiral, which is my favourite #butterfly by quite a distance. I can confirm that as of yesterday it is now high summer. This one at the #Wiltshire #WildlifeTrust reserve #Ravensroost Woods. #insects #wildlife #wildlifephotography #odonata

  20. I went to the #Wiltshire #WildlifeTrust reserve at #Ravensroost wood on Friday, specifically to look for False Oxlip. And here it is. It's a hybrid of Cowslip and Primrose, which has large flowers like a primrose but on the end of a stalk like a cowslip. #WildflowerHour #WoodlandPlants #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #plantscience #photography

  21. The results of a trip to the #Wiltshire #WildlifeTrust reserve at #Ravensroost wood on Friday. Wood Anemone, Barren Strawberry, Dog Violet and Lesser Celandine. All are specialised #WoodlandPlants in the UK although the latter two do grow out in the open as well. #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #plantscience #photography
