I've managed to write a couple of blog posts this week, but am only just getting around to mentioning them here :)

In 2024 my family bought a new 2024 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XSE. I had modeled the costs of several vehicles before purchasing this. Twelve months later I analyzed the modeled versus actual costs.
Here is a blog post summarizing the modeled versus actual costs, and the effective cost-per-mile.
TLDR the cost/mile was $0.98 - but that would have been lower if we'd driven more miles.

In preparation for taking delivery of my #RAV4 Plug-in #Hybrid in July (hopefully), I decided to learn more about hybrids. And guess what? The viral solar panel guy has a video about them! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnUFH5GX_fI&feature=youtu.be
This is a deep dive, but my favorite part is when he shows actual data (with narration) from the engine computer as the car is driving. He also says what I assumed: Toyota nailed the design of its hybrids.

The #RAV4 plug-in hybrid I'm planning to get will eventually replace both my Jeep and my truck and I'm not the kind of person who sticks to pavement. (I live 2 miles down a gravel road.) It's really good to see that this vehicle has features that enable it to tackle rough roads. But 8 inches of clearance? Holy cow! I don't think that's much better than my S2000.

Last week I changed to new tires. I used them for a week and this weekend I drove to Vienna. In Parndorf (where I stopped to buy ski boots) the car alerted me that the pressure in one of the tires are low. I saw a hole in it.
I went to a repair shop and they said that they can't repair it, but they can give me another tire to drive home.
I got the new tires for 170 EUR for each. Here I got a used one for 90 EUR.
Hopefully when I got home, my repairman will be able to fix the damaged tire. -
Had been holding off on installing the rear facing camera for our dashcam because it meant running wire from front windshield to rear.
Turns out it was super easy to do. Took maybe 15 minutes.
Hope to never need anything from that camera, but it's there now.

Used to be very stressed when driving in the morning to work and stuck in the traffic jam...
Nowdays I drove my wife to work every morning (40-50 min. in one way) and I'm unexpectedly calm.... I know, we are in time and we will arrive 30 min. earlier every day, and then I still have so much time to get home or to the office before I have to work...
So I'm chilling in the traffic jam, listening great music, and just enjoying life.Of course the new car helps, I can take all the route electric.

We loved it on our test drive but were concerned about its low reliability rating with #consumerreports .
As best we could tell, it's still apparently having ICCU and 12 volt failures, occasionally with long waits for parts, despite several recalls in the past few years.
Would have loved to get one but we went with a more reliable #toyota #RAV4 #PHEV for the next 3 years.
We didn't look at #Tesla because we're not fascists.😉

Thinking about car theft and vulnerabilities, @todb you know what would freak people out? If CISA added CVE-2023-29389 (6.5 medium, disclosed 05 April 2023) to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) Catalog.
Toyota RAV4 2021 vehicles automatically trust messages from other ECUs on a CAN bus, which allows physically proximate attackers to drive a vehicle by accessing the control CAN bus after pulling the bumper away and reaching the headlight connector, and then sending forged "Key is validated" messages via CAN Injection, as exploited in the wild in (for example) July 2022.
