We have settled into a pattern now.
Treat for Fizz and Truffle.
Fizz runs away and eats his.
Truffle hides his in the same place each time, then comes to me trying to get another.
Truffle does not get another, wanders off.
Fizz now has learned to go look in Truffle's hiding place, and finds the treat.
Fizz starts eating treat.
Truffle bears, goes to find Fizz.
An argument ensues.
They generally each end up with a bit of Truffle's treat.
Have peanuts.
Give one (double) peanut to each older boy.
Fizz starts eating.
Truffle hides his, then comes back to me and steals one out of my hand, hides that too.
Fizz continues eating.
Truffle steals half a peanut from Fizz and hides it.
I give Fizz another peanut.
Fizz finishes peanut, wanders around, finds Truffles stash, steals a peanut and goes to a very secret place to eat it (litter tray back in the cage).
I've lost track of the moral scoreboard.

It's not a pleasant experience and I'm wondering if the carrier method would have worked better. It seems they will get there eventually, it's just a matter of waiting it out.

Things are slowly improving as they learn to put up with each other. There have been some spicy squeaking shrieking moments but they're rarely when I am there and done before I reach them.
The younger three slept near but not next to Truffle last night which seems encouraging.
The cage is filling up with timings as the territorial behaviour is reducing.

Baron wasn't calming down in the bathtub, so I decided to move to the next stage. I think that was the right choice as he has tried keeping at it for a while. When he gets to that state, he also dominates his brother's more which stresses them.
Of the older boys, Truffle generally wants to be left alone while Fizz is more territorial. I imagine with his poor eyesight, it's more stressful for him.

They had already met a few times in the bathtub, so I could see how it was going to go. Baron had shown determination to be king rat, which is a brave choice against two adults at their prime ages. That didn't seem to be going away so I moved forward.
I have previously used the carrier method for introductions, but was trying to avoid it this time as it is higher stress in the short term than repeated neutral grounds meetings.

It has been a spicy few days. I finally put the two groups of rats together and it's not been the worst, but it has not been the best.
Here's an early pic from Saturday. The tension has gone down and the cage has got another layer added and things are slowly being added to it.

Introductions continue. The older boys are very chill about it. The younger boys more stressed. Stilton as ever is terrified; he's a nervous boy. Baron wants to stay head rat, seen here trying to dominate, but two adults males in their prime and twice his weight aren't going to make that easy.
I imagine Baron will retry this as he keeps growing.
While it's a bit more for me to deal with, I'm glad my older boys have such confidence in me that when I'm leaning into their cage to clean/swap/tidy stuff, they have no fear whatsoever and climb all over me like they are playing Shadow of the Colossus.

All three seem to be settling OK. The bigger two are direct nephews of Fizz. They are all related to an extent.
The older two have the sniffles. It's common when they move to a new house, but I took them to the vet on Monday about it to be sure. They're on anti-inflammatories right now. So for the moment they're not being introduced to Fizz and Truffle.
I recently had 12 months where I lost 7 old rats, so I'm just enjoying the youthful energy for now 🙂

This is Cheddar. He shares a dad with the other two, but was born to a different mother about a week later. He is a russian blue agouti smooth - having only known the standard agoutis, his colouring was a revelation to me! He's noticeably smaller than the others, but brave with it - he stands up for himself in wrestles! He has been the bravest with me, the first and furthest to explore in general. We've bonded the most so far 😍

This is Baron, a smooth beige. He is brother to Stilton. He's the second most confident and the heaviest of the three (not much bigger than Stilton though). He is getting braver with being on me. I think he may be the head rat, it's hard to tell and I think fairly fluid anyway.

I got three new rat children almost two weeks ago now! I'm still getting to know them, as they are not comfortable enough for their personalities to show yet.
This is Stilton. He is a russian blue rex. Of the three, he is the most nervous of me and things in general. I have been breaking through slowly. He likes digging and "swims" through loose bedding like a tiny rat shark.

I have new baby rats! But that means there has been a bit less energy for my older boys, which I feel bad about. Today I gave the older pair a treat of some cat grass that has been growing for a few weeks. They enjoy plants, but when I have given them cress, they go digging into it quickly. I was hoping that longer grass might survive a bit longer. They have waddled over and flattened most of it at this point though.
I love my yam boys.
Fizz is about 8 months old now and today I noticed an expected change in his coat that a male puberty causes. He's gone from being ultra soft to having a little more roughness in his texture. He's still very strokable and largely happy for me to stroke him so I'm not complaining.
While their such short lives can feel a curse, getting to see them develop and grow into themselves, and then chill out as they eventually retire is also kinda lovely.

Truffle has better sight than his half brother, so is much braver about exploring the boundaries of his reality. He had a day or two of being obsessed with escape, but has calmed down. It's on me to offer better enrichment to keep him occupied.

Introducing Fizz (on top) and Truffle (below). They are half brothers, born a day apart to their respective mothers, two months ago. They are nervous but sociable and seemingly bribable. They will probably be introduced to the others after Christmas.
