Dash and Rose are bored and looking to be entertained.
I had to separate my mischief into two cages because the 3 new sisters are just too tough and boisterous for my 3 older rats. Especially Saffy, who's quite fragile and almost completely blind, they gang up on her, poor little thing!
I don't have space for two big cages, so I got one new small cage, and they have to take turns in the big cage. This morning the sisters are in the smaller cage and they're frustrated.
I'll let them play on the sofa just now, we've got a game where they chase a straw around, and take breaks to groom me.
I am, apparently, an absolute mess, the amount of thorough and systematic grooming I require.

Maybe because of the cooler weather, the rats have been hard at work lining their beds with newspaper scraps.
The older rats took a relaxed approach and created quite a comfortable nest for themselves. The 3 young sisters, in contrast, hoarded every scrap of newspaper in their cage and absolutely stuffed their bed so full that there was barely any space for them to crawl inside.
(I've seperated the old and young rats in separate cages because there was just too much bullying going on)

My rats are prone to respiratory infections so I regularly put them in a nebulizer to prevent them getting sick.
The older three have grown used to it, as you can see, Nicodemus is grooming Saffy.
The younger three are little drama queens and still make a fuss. See Rose spreading her little hand out like Spock in the Wrath of Khan.

Dash is confident and in command. She'll push herself into my hand and then crouch there calmly accepting caresses, while giving me a thorough but gentle manicure.
Rose is nervy and suspicious, and quite intense. She'll insist on trying to pull my wedding ring off with her teeth, not caring if she nips me in the process. Always moving.
Cinnamon is private and a little withdrawn. She allows me to stroke her, cuddling quietly under my hand for a while, and then she's off to do her own thing. She also spits when she's annoyed! Feisty little thing 😅

So the last few days have been hell. On Monday we discovered that Peach, one of our #rats had a tumor just 4 weeks after having one removed in surgery. We discovered two more on Tuesday. She was then booked for surgery together with Bobby who also has a tumor. We had 5 tumors and 4 rats at this point. The surgery on Thursday went well for the most part, but one tumor of Peach was infiltrating nearby tissue so it wasn't as clean of a cut as other tumors. We took them home and stayed with them to make sure they were okay. At 3am I went to sleep (in the same room as the rats as a precaution). At 4am I woke up with a bad feeling and checked on the rats. To my horror I found that Peach had bit open one of her wounds and tissue, leaked through the gap, approximately 1 cm. I completely panicked tbh. I immediately put her into a transport box to monitor her and stop her from doing more damage. She was clearly in pain although she still was on painkillers after surgery. My contact to the rescue where we got them was asleep so we called the vet that had emergency service that night. They pretty much told us they could do nothing as they where not familiar with rats and would only refer us to our usual vet. We should try globules (WTF?!?).
We instead tried to bandage her up to prevent infection and her doing more damage but she just wasn't allowing us to. So the waiting began until our usual vet opened at 8:45 am.
Luckily the person from the shelter woke up and managed to calm me down, they have had similar situations. At 8:30am I got on the bus and went to the vet (20 minutes to walk, but a bit fast with the bus).
Luckily they were very nice, immediately recognized the problem and I was called in within ten minutes. The vet gave her a new suture.Now we went home with her, but what to do now? If it happened again another suture wasn't an option, it'd need to heal openly. That is possible but comes with immense pain and risk. So my partner and I monitored her. Never layed eyes of her for the next 36 hours. We built her a custom free roam area where we could have a look at her at all times and took shifts. She wasn't happy we stopped her from manipulating the wound. After the first 6 hours she regained her energy. She was a lot harder to watch after that. After 24 hours (Saturday at noon) we put her back into the cage, alone initially. She managed to pull out two stitches after that as she did it really fast. But the wound was okay. So after another 12 hours of monitoring we could finally let her be. The wound that was the biggest problem seemed to be okay and the others were even better. I'm just so thankful we have a good vet and amazing people from the shelter that help us throughout everything. During all those hours they were there, made suggestions and shared information. Really incredible.
Thought I had to share that. If everything goes well they will heal in the next ten days. Right now everyone is cuddling in one small house and it just makes me happy.

CW: Pet rat
My boy Moe is back after an overnight stay at the vet. His breathing had been getting worse over a few days and I was scared to wait the weekend out as I had just run out of the medication that was meant to help with respiratory issues.
He is my favourite of them all. I do love the lot of them, but he's the one who bonded with me most strongly of all the older boys. I've learned to enjoy each of them as they are though, their differences can be delightful.

Keeping my rats entertained by constantly changing their cage setup.
The latest experiment is adding an extension by attaching two cages to one another with a long pipe.
They love it. Especially Cinnamon (or is her name Kaneel? Still deciding ) She's permanently in the small cage now.
The pipe makes the oddest resonant pipe noise when they run along inside it.
I want to figure out a way to set it up so that one cage is on top of the other. A vertical pipe seems a bit dangerous. Maybe if I get a lot of elbows and make a switchback situation.
