The Abyssinians – Satta Massagana (1976, Jamaica)

Our next spotlight is on number 442 on The List, submitted by weirdofhermiston.

The Abyssinians were a vocal trio of Bernard Collins and brothers Donald and Lynford Manning. The title track of this, their debut album,[1] was originally recorded in 1969 for Jamaica’s renowned label Studio One but, after the producer/label owner (Clement “Coxsone” Dodd) held it back, the trio bought the master tapes and self-released it. The song – which has some lyrics in the Ethiopian Amharic language – became a hymn sung in Rastafarian services, and the album as a whole is considered a classic in the roots reggae genre.

Accompanying the trio on this album are a few familiar names and overall cornerstones of Jamaica’s reggae scene, including:

• the prolific and late Robbie Shakespeare on bass and Sly Dunbar on drums, who are in at least a couple other albums on The List including Sinéad O’Connor’s Throw Down Your Arms (which has a cover of this album’s “Y Mas Gan”) and to-be-spotlit Grace Jones’ Nightclubbing;
• Tyrone Downie on keyboards, who the year previous appeared on Burning Spear’s Marcus Garvey and then also in 1976 would make his recording debut as part of Bob Marley & The Wailers on Rastaman Vibration (we’ll hear from Downie again when we get to our spotlights on the live Babylon By Bus, as well as Grace Jones’ Nightclubbing;
• Earl “Chinna” Smith on guitars, who was also on Marcus Garvey and Rastaman Vibration, as well as on the to-be-spotlit Lee Perry’s The Upsetters Super Ape and Augustus Pablo’s King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown;
• plus Mikey “Boo” Richards and Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace (drums), Val Douglas (bass), Mikey Chung (guitars), Geoffrey Chung (keyboards), Jerome Francique and Llewellyn Chang (horns), and Clive Hunt (keyboards, horns, flute) (some or all of whom probably are also hiding elsewhere on The List, for all I know).

Its beliefs are a melding of Old Testament teachings and a desire to return to Africa. Ich empfehle allen, die sich für Entkolonisierung, Völkerrecht, vergleichende Geschichte und Rastafarianismus interessieren, die Lektüre der vor 10 Jahren erschienenen Biografie "Der letzte Kaiser von Afrika" über Äthiopien und Kaiser Haile Selassie. Es ist ein großes Glück für die deutschsprachige Leserschaft, dass der Autor Asfa-Wossen Asserate in Deutschland lebt und wir seine Perspektive erfahren können, vor allem als Korrektur der Berichte von Ryszard Kapuściński und Evelyn Waugh.
Schockierend und erhellend war für mich der Umgang des Völkerbundes mit dem italienischen Angriffskrieg 1935 - das Appeasement mit dem Aggressor ebnete den folgenden Aggressionen Deutschlands und der Sowjetunion den Weg. Die Parallele sehen wir heute im Appeasement gegenüber Russland. Die Fehler des damaligen Großbritannien wiederholt die heutige USA.
Leider sind Äthiopien und Eritrea bis heute nicht zur Ruhe gekommen - ich wünsche den Menschen dort alles Gute.

Self-Titled Summer | Bad Brains (1982, US)

Our next Self-Titled Summer spotlight is on number 540 on The List, submitted by myself (buffyleigh). Here’s a quick rundown:

• Point(s) of origin: This group first formed in 1976 in Washington D.C. as a jazz fusion band called Mind Power, with Dr. Know on lead guitar, Darryl Jenifer on bass, Paul Hudson aka H.R. on rhythm guitar, H.R.’s brother Earl on drums, and Sid McCray as the singer. When the band members got into punk rock, they switched both their sound and their name, referencing the Ramones’ song, “Bad Brain“. The band then incorporated reggae sounds into their new hardcore punk direction after seeing Bob Marley live, McCray left, and H.R. became the singer. By 1979/80, the band was banned from the major local clubs, and so, around 1980/81, they relocated to NYC. By the time this, their debut studio album, was released (on cassette only, hence also referred to as The Yellow Tape), the band was an important part of the NYC hardcore scene, and regularly played CBGB.
• Tasting notes: Hardcore punk, reggae fusion, Rastafari dub
• Standout track: “Banned in D.C.”, which is about them being banned in D.C., and the band’s debut single “Pay to Cum“, originally released in 1980.
• Where are they now?: Many of the tracks from this debut were re-recorded for their following LP, Rock for Light (1983). Bad Brains would then break up for the first time, and then would reform (and break up, and reform…) and go on to release seven more studio albums (the last one, Into the Future, in 2012), incorporating more styles into their sound including funk, soul, and heavy metal. The band has changed their line-up many times (particularly swapping out the Hudson brothers), but they are currently listed as still being active and with the same line-up as the debut s/t.
