Finally I think I've found a suitable portable computer https://www.waveshare.com/pocketterm35.htm
A linux #RaspberryPi5 pocket computer.
Mostly working with a built in physical keyboard (so it'll work within my medical limits), under 1/2 the price of Smartphones with physical keyboards that are questionable in being able to be degoogled.
which is to say with a free tailscale account https://tailscale.com/pricing#why-does-tailscale-use-a-seat-based-pricing-model
I should be able to email back & forth with my spouse as needed when I'm on the go.

@mechanical0815"Anyone powering a #Raspi5 via 12 V or USB QC/PD/Y-Splitter cable or anything else than 110 V/240 V?"
Yes! Mine runs from 24VDC via a sealed DC-to-DC block:
Tiny Machines 3D <[email protected]>
12-24 to 5V for FivPi TM39726
12V/24V to 5V 10A 50W DC DC Step Down / Buck Converter
$6.50 Shipping $5.72 Total 12.22 USDDaygreen B10-1224-05
At first I saw lots of voltage errors. Turned out to be the foot long 24AWG clip leads I tried. After changing to 18AWG 4 inch wires with soldered clips, and doubling the connections to the Pi header, it has been rok solid for a year.

Anyone powering a #Raspi5 via 12 V or USB QC/PD/Y-Splitter cable or anything else than 110 V/240 V?
Original Power supply 🇪🇺 is 240 V -> 5.1 V @ 5 A (25.5 Watts) - yes I have one.However, I would like to power the Raspi via a power station in order to use it with my telescope (#astrophotography), either with 12 V (like the mounts) or via USB (where the camera and other devices are powered).
Using the 240 V AC port on power stations drains the battery (much) faster, therefore I don't want to use it - unless it is really really necessary. 🙄
The USB ports on my power station deliver 3.1 A, which is not enough. Can a USB Y-splitter cable help by connecting two of the 3 A USB ports to one to get ~5 amps?
Or is there a power supply 12 V -> USB 4-5 A available?
Using a 12 V Power supply with two 3.1 A USB ports and a Y-splitter cable seems not to work. 🤨
(I don't know if 3.1 A can be delivered on both ports at the same time). -

Danke, Dr. Klipper!

Hi, beim Raspi 5 Fan connector, wo ist da PIN 1? Innen oder aussen? #raspi5 #fediknowhow @LasseGismo

Well, I finally got a raspberry Pi 5. Got the official case with it and just loaded in a 256gb micro sr card. I already tested it out a little with a Minecraft server and it ran great with no tweaks at all. Only some slowness on terrain generation.
Very cool little device, gonna use this for some projects in the future!
Also, this is the 8GB model.

#raspi5 is it worth the money?
Incl. PoE head and PCIe slot this thing is like ~100€ 😬
(like some used PCs - power is not a problem)

The experience of Abhishek Prakash with a Raspberry Pi 5 matches mine with a Pi 400. Recent Pi devices make for affordable and practical Linux desktop machines for most everyday tasks.

So far I used #homebridge on a Raspi3 for all my "inofficial" #homekit stuff. Just ordered a #raspi5 to try out #homeassistant for that task…
Any advice? I also ordered the active cooler, but I am unsure if I want a fan… Is it only on if needed? That'd be ok. Also, power supply is a lot more reliable now with USB-C PD, and I can just use one of Ikeas new power supplies, even if I attach an SSD, right? -
The Raspberry Pi 5 really DOES get warm!
You definitely want a case with active cooling. #raspi5 -
Other tidbits:
- make sure you run the latest Raspberry Pi Imager when writing your SD card: older versions don't offer images for the #RasPi5
- once the initial boot took place, Pi OS boots in a matter of seconds and everything feels pretty snappy
- idle power consumption of this Pi5 with a resting desktop and active fan was about 3.3W; around 4.5W while launching Chromium.5/
