"'Despicable': Lawmaker tears into Trump's DHS chief after mayor's 'targeting'
Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-IL) laid a smackdown on Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on MSNBC, over the ongoing effort to prosecute Newark, New Jersey Mayor Ras Baraka.
Baraka, a progressive candidate for governor, joined a protest along with several members of Congress at Delaney Hall, a large, privately-operated detention facility being used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in contravention of local laws prohibiting such facilities from operating in the area. He was arrested on trespassing charges, which he disputes and claims he had every right to investigate the facility for the well-being of his community. Noem defended all of this at a congressional hearing this week, which Ramirez is a member of.

The takeaway, she added, is that 'they're wanting to make sure that the American people know that they're willing to go after anyone. This is about fear. This is what authoritarians do, fascists do. They go after judges, members of Congress, and mayors of their own city.'"

Mayor #RasBaraka was initially allowed past the fence, acc/to video he released last week that he said showed him being INVITED past the gates before he was arrested, seemingly contradicting accusations that he had barged into the facility without permission. He was then asked to leave & exited voluntarily.
However, federal agents wearing face coverings & military fatigues appeared outside the gates to arrest the mayor, video shows, leading to the chaotic scene. -
In Feb, #ICE entered into a $1B contract w/ #GEOGroup, one of the country’s largest #PrivatePrison companies, to convert the building into a detention center. But Mayor #RasBaraka, who is running for governor of #NJ, galvanized opposition against the detention center, arguing that it had opened w/o the proper permits or inspections.
The controversy engulfing the facility drew the attention of the NJ lawmakers, who visited the facility on May 9 to inspect conditions.

Mayor Ras Baraka gave an extended interview this morning which sets the record straight about the sequence of events on Friday and why Mayor Baraka was at the ICE facility.
DHS officials are claiming that the Congress people Baraka was with assaulted federal agents, which is plainly a lie. None the less DHS claims they will press charges on the representatives who were given a tour.

A core part of why Ras Baraka was at the ICE facility is that he claims the city of Newark was never contacted for fire inspections and operating licenses necessary for the detention center to be allowed to operate in the city.
According to Ras Baraka the entire ICE operation taking place in his town is illegal and should cease operating until they can follow the law.
