Once upon a time American cities like New York and even #Sacramento #California used a super-inclusive, proportional form of #RankChoiceVoting called the Single Transferable Vote. It's basically #RCV with multiple winners in each race. STV was quite successful at representing a wider array of social and political groups in each city. Until the two big parties (and the courts in Sacramento's case) killed it off. But it's making a comeback in cities like #Portland !

@benroyce @deilann @tofugolem @rozeboosje @CptSuperlative I would argue that the problem is the two party primary system where extremists on both sides show up for the primaries leaving the final ballot with only the extremes… and replacing the primary system with rank choice voting on Election Day is the solution

@ShadSterling @QasimRashid #rankchoicevoting? It gets rid of the primaries where the fanatics nominate who’ll be in the ballot, and allows you to protest vote who you really like as well as who’ll you settle for.

@benroyce hopefully they don’t look back on their vote with 20/20 hindsight and regret as I did back in ‘80, voting for Jon Anderson.
It is also a case for #rankchoicevoting: you can make your statement but also back it up to do your best to assure that the wrong person doesn’t win.

@Wileymiller nobody’s vote should count more than another’s.
… mostly (but not all) caused by #gerrymandering. It might be easier to make that illegal than an amendment.
#rankchoicevoting would also help, and rid us of primary elections that tend to put extremists on the general election ballot (who then gerrymander the electorate)
