@DVM_vet At least one of the #RAMC sergeants who accompanied the Canadian surgeon Major Colin Scott Dafoe on an #SOE mission to eastern Bosnia in 1944 was in Bari when the attack occurred. He suffered minor injuries.

#Herbaria are not just about #plants but also about #history. #CuratorLife is also about learning about collectors. Today, I solved the mystery of a collector from India, "Col. R.S. Vine". It's Roland Stephen Vine (1910-2003). He was with the #RAMC, the Royal Army Medical Corps, and stationed in India between 1936 and 1939. That's when we have his collections from India from. But he also collected in the UK and Greece but those collections are in Kew #Herbarium.

I am trying to identify two British #RAMC sergeants who accompanied Major Colin Scott Dafoe into eastern Bosnia in May 1944: Chris Real (7371113) and Frank Oxley (service no unknown). Real later went to Malaysia with #SOE. Oxley is the greater mystery. Was his name Frank, Francis? Was that his first or middle name? What happened to him after 1944? If anyone has ideas about how I can positively identify these two fellows, please let me know.

@militaryhistory #OTD in 1909, Colin Scott Dafoe was born in Madoc, Ontario. While serving with the #RAMC in North Africa, he volunteered for “a dangerous mission to the Balkans” and in May 1944 parachuted into eastern Bosnia to lead a #SOE medical unit supporting Tito’s Partisans.
