Obsolete hardware
Whenever I need to run an operating system on obsolete computing hardware, I find the smallest distribution Puppy Linux comes into mind.
The last number of years Slitaz has been doing an enormously great job keeping my old hardware to chug along.Slitaz is so small it can run on RAM:
That's Amiga speak for ramdisk

One thing I give a lot of credit is /tmp.
In most Linux distributions, this folder is basically a "RAM Drive". You can put anything there, and then it's gone at restart. No need to install "RAM Drive" managers or what sort.
One thing I wonder is what would happen if you abuse it. Is there a way to limit how much "space" it can take before you're out of memory?

@landley I'll propably have to gut functions out of toybox to get it where I want it to be, but then again the "#CORE" Version of OS/1337 will be very much barebones....
Just the essentials to get #Dropbear #Client to be able to #SSH into stuff, be able to make a #ramdisk and #wget / tiny-#curl everything else (i.e. a system image one could dd onto a HDD/SSD)...
Kinda like an old #netinstall #Floppy...
Ideally configureable to the point that I could also swap #dbclient for dropbear as #Server

While #SDF #Plan9 Bootcamp has been quiet, I pulled out my #MVS #tk4- host and replaced it with #tk5 !
Following the videos of #Moshix on #YouTube I've enabled a few other upgrades!
• Main/work DASDs are now on #ramdisk for faster access with hourly sync to NV storage
• #Networking via #NJE38 to RELAY with other systems
• Upgraded #COBOL and other compilers from Jay Mosley's #SYSCPK
• mfprint ( #Go socket printer) needed a few code updates but is dumping to NFS to make PDFs easier to grab now -
#AMD 3D #VCache enables #RAMdisk to hit 182 GB/s speeds — over 12X faster than the fastest #PCIe5.0 #SSD
A RAM disk delivered sequential read and write speeds around 178 GB/s and 163 GB/s, respectively, in #CrystalDiskMark reportedly from a RAM disk running on AMD's #Ryzen7 #7800X3D #CPU. Nemez, a user on X (Twitter), discovered the method. The method is based on #OSFMount, free software that allows you to create RAM disks and mount the image files in different formats.

@kurth granted I do prefer #Live-#Linux - Systems that avoid writes as much as possible and I do intent do enable OS/1337 to support a "boot from RAM" mode where it's copied as #Ramdisk and then started...
Because I do like that feature from @bunsenlabs / #BunsenLabs Linux and #PorteusKiosk as it provides a fast-feeling system whilst also yeeting all data afterwards.
Pretty shure @tails_live still wipes RAM manually at shutdown...
-
@whitekiba I mean I don't look for computational efficiency....
OFC modern crypto needs a lot of processing power...
But I'd even consider doing a #ramdisk and making a script that #wget's #dropbear as a working hack...
Even if that makes it a sort-of "#netlive" [ #netinstaller meets #live #linux] workaround...
-
@fuzztech @volpeon @ubuntu np.
One core advantage that @bunsenlabs #BunsenLabsLinux has is that it not only takes #Debian :debian: stable packages but also supports "Load into RAM" and then runs from a blazigly fast #RAMDISK, which makes it even snappier on machines > 4GB RAM...
-
@lethalbit Considering the speed and cost, that is somewhat expected.
Personally, I wished for a #RAMDISK that is accessible via #SATA, #USB, #SDIO and/or #PCIe:
Like the #iRAM, #CGRAMDISK & #HyperDrive5:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HyperOs_HyperDrive -
@littlefox Jokes aside: This is nifty as it allows me to not only setup a big & contigous #RAMdisk that isn't fragmented across #NUMA nodes but also wipe that block cleanly...
-
@PeterCxy @sigmasternchen yes and no:
Yes in that it'll require people to desolder stuff first.
No in that it's benefit is negigible considering that this attack vector will only apply to state-sponsored attackers and console hacking, so if someone has physical access to the PCB you're already f**ked.
Also you may want to instead use #encryption over #tmpfs if you want to use a #RAMdisk ...
-
CW: :boost_ok: :boost_requested: tech, rant, gnupg,
Simply because all keys are supposed to only be in an [encrypted] #RAMDISK!
-
TIL: You can actually create a RAM disk on a GPUs VRAM, but the latency will not be great, since you are limited by the PCIe connection to CPU, while RAM is directly connected.

Sehr hilfreich. Hatte die letzten Tage häufiger Probleme mit "out of memory", da ich doch realtiv viel auf dem Ding laufen habe. -
Last night, my #WindowsPC #crashed. Turns out, mouse software tried an automated update. I use a 1GB #RAMDISK as tmp, this hugely speeds up so much, but does not suffice for downloads of 250MB mouse software.
