In einem Jahr, das auch filmhistorisch zwischen Aufbruch und Abgrund lag, hat dieser Film Roman Polański 1968 endgültig zu einer Schlüsselfigur des internationalen Kinos gemacht. Zuvor hatte der in Paris geborene und in Polen aufgewachsene Regisseur schon mit „Das Messer im Wasser“ (1962) und „Ekel“ (1965) gezeigt, dass er das Spiel mit psychologischem Druck und räumlicher Enge meisterhaft beherrscht. Decided to watch a movie from Criterion’s pre-code collection. I picked Forbidden because it’s got Adolphe Menjou, who I always enjoy.
It’s scandalous, young woman meets a dashing man on vacation. After they get back she learns he’s actually married. Cut to a few years later and she’s raising her daughter alone.
This is why 30s movies are interesting. The code stifled creativity for decades after.

This Man Is Mine is a 1934 pre-code comedy/melodrama. Very pre-code, sophisticated, cynical. Irene Dunne's marriage is threatened by her husband's scheming ex. Dunne and Kay Johnson are terrific and wear amazing gowns. Delightful film.

Watching a rough gray market DVD of one of the last Ida Lupino movies I have yet to see, “Let’s Get Married” (1937)—where one of the romantic plot points is Ida wanting to increase the Weather Bureau’s budget. Alas, about 60 minutes in to this 68-minute movie, the movie freezes and I discover the disc is corrupted.
Now I’ll have to see if there’s any other version I can obtain to find out if Ralph Bellamy actually gets the girl in this movie
