Der Gitarrist Ralph Towner ist tot – Der Jazz-Erzähler mit dem klassischen Klang
Er war ein Musiker mit völlig eigenem Ton. Der amerikanische Gitarrist und Komponist Ralph Towner, nicht zuletzt bekannt durch die stilistisch weit offene Band “Oregon”, ist am 18. Januar 2026 im Alter von 85 Jahren gestorben.

Er hatte früh das erreicht, worauf jeder Musiker stolz wäre: einen ganz eigenen Klang zu formen. Wer auch nur wenige Töne von Ralph Towner hört, zumal solche, die der Musiker auf einer klassischen Nylonsaiten-Gitarre spielt, dürfte seinen Klang beim nächsten Mal sofort wiedererkennen. Ralph Towner, in späten Jahren ein weißhaariger, freundlicher Wuschelkopf mit lichten Stellen auf dem Haupt, war ein Meister des Erzählens auf dem Instrument. Wenn er Solo-Konzerte gab, saß er – meist in unspektakulär-bequemem, grauem oder blauem Alltags-Jackett und Jeans – auf einem Klavierschemel, den linken Fuß auf einer Gitarristen-Fußstütze aufgesetzt, wie man sie eigentlich nur aus der klassischen Musik kennt, und versenkte sich ganz und gar ins Spiel.

Sadly we've lost #RalphTowner , one of contemporary acoustic guitar's most original artists. Last I looked he was still making new music and happy to be putting it out there. His and #MichaelHedges voices have long been part of the soundtrack of this life...

We are deeply saddened by the news that guitarist and composer Ralph Towner has died in Rome at age 85. Editor David R. Adler reviewed Towner's solo concert at Zankel Hall in 2006, a show presented by the long-gone JVC Jazz Festival. "The first thing to say about Towner as a guitarist is that he is a pianist. A disciple of the late Bill Evans, he began his professional career on piano, and he continues to play the instrument live and on record as a member of the quartet Oregon. His approach on nylon-string classical and 12-string acoustic guitars reflects this training. He has mastered the fretboard and the sonic possibilities of the guitar like few others, but his harmonic imagination has a wider sweep than six or 12 strings can commonly express." Listening to the album Batik with #RalphTowner, #EddieGomez & #JackDeJohnette. It’s extraordinary, the rapport between Gomez and #DeJohnette. One of the latter’s great strengths was his ability to lock in with a range of great #bassists. He really will be missed. #RIP #jazz #music #MusicSky #JazzSky
