Umbrella mosses and lichens in lush greens and purples on the forest floor on (edit: Ulva Island, not) Stewart Island Rakiura.
Some of those mosses look a bit like tarantulas, but I promise they're not. I would've been running away rather than taking photos otherwise...

We had some time on beautiful Stewart Island, Rakiura, earlier this week. The Oban harbour at Halfmoon Bay hosts a number of seabirds, including albatrosses, muttonbirds (Shearwaters), and terns.
I managed to get some shots of this albatross (White-capped, I think) as it ran along the water as part of its take-off.

"As the world’s southernmost Dark Sky Sanctuary, #Rakiura is home to some of the best stargazing on the planet. This is perhaps unsurprising, given that one of the #Māori meanings of its name is ‘land of the glowing skies.’"

Today was a driving day, so here’s a further pic from #Rakiura, taken in Horseshoe Bay. Clearly, a spacecraft had crash-landed in the bay & this Alien escaped from the ship’s cargo hold, following containment failure. It was moving, but was that just the tide? There was no sign of a Predator—but then you don’t see one & live to tell about it, do you?

Today’s walk from Oban in steady 🌧️ (our last on #Rakiura) was an easy 9km/ 2.5h circuit on well-formed track & sealed road, taking in Butterfield Beach, with a community shelter/ BBQ area (📷1), Bragg Bay (📷2), Sarah Cove (📷3), & Dead Man Beach—notably free from 🏴☠️ pirates (📷4). Good views from Horseshoe Point before track turns in towards Horseshoe Bay & then follow the road back into Oban. Recommended in any weather.

Bathing Beach (📷1) a short walk from Oban’s waterfront on #Rakiura; viewed from path around Church Hill. The beach continues beyond a rocky outcrop (except at high tide), where an oystercatcher pair demonstrated hopping skills (📷2). Mill Creek empties into this part of the beach; named for the water-powered sawmill here, est. 1874—but the business sank, like this boat (📷). Boat at Leask Bay no more seaworthy (📷4)!

#Rakiura is 75km long & 40km at its widest; 85% of island is remote national park, but there are more proximal tracks. We headed west, passing Thule Bay (📷1), Vaila Voe Bay with Faith, Hope & Charity islets (📷2), to Ryans Creek mouth (📷3) where saw a kotare/ kingfisher. Then turned inland, taking a stint on the Rakiura Track (Great Walk: 32km/ 3d) to Main Rd car park, then into Oban for ☕️ with constitution study (📷4).

In Oban on #Rakiura the Ultimate Answer isn’t 42; it’s 13,477 according to numerate locals (📷1). Paradise shelducks made it here too & they always come in pairs (📷2 is a male; females have white heads). Lonnekers Beach in Little Bay made an impression in the afternoon sun, with distinctive eucalyptus planting behind golden sands fronting a clear-water anchorage (📷3&4).

(1/3) Ulva Island is the largest of a group in #Rakiura’s Paterson Inlet. Access is by guided tour boat, scheduled ferry ($25 rtn), water taxi or kayak. Ferry departs from Golden Bay (📷1); loved the leaf boarding pass (📷2) & issued blanket. Adrift after engine overheated midway (📷3). Skipper’s calm & humour helped until transfer to water taxi. Ferry repaired to pick us up from Ulva’s Post Office Bay 3.5h later (📷4).

Watercress Beach at Thule Bay (📷1) on #Rakiura is a short off-road walk from Oban via the interconnecting Fuchsia Walk, Traill Park & Raroa Walk. You can rent a kayak here to explore Thule Bay (📷2) & beyond. Golden Bay (📷3) also offers sea kayaking options & hosts the wharf for the Ulva Island ferry (just a 10 min road walk from Oban). Access to Ringaringa Beach (📷4) from the south end is closed due to cliff erosion.

Deep Bay (📷1) on #Rakiura our home for a few nights. Off-grid cabin (📷2) reached via muddy bush track at end of beach. We have solar-powered lights, diesel heater, bunks, desk, TV/DVD, gas hob, fridge, sink, rainwater &—oddly, a dishwasher (📷3). Hot shower is open-air & outside flush toilet has no lighting nor window, so use requires a head torch or open door (📷4)! More comfortable lodging on the island is expensive.

#Rakiura (“glowing skies”, after Aurora australis) is NZ’s 3rd largest island. Oban township within Halfmoon Bay has mainly sealed roads, the essential amenities & is home to ~400 people. The only settlement on the island, it’s linked to “the other side” by air or a 40km/ 1h passenger ferry trip across the notorious Foveaux Strait. Fishing & more latterly tourism are key to life here—as is tolerance of frequent rain!

Walk from Mason Bay to Freshwater Landing. Starts with a big dune system then a vast peat bog. Lots of board walks. Interesting environment. Also easy and flat all the way.

Rakiura/Stewart Island weka taking an interest in my pack. They don't have the slightest fear of humans and lots of curiosity. When we dozed off in the sun one of them settled in next to us for a sleep. Just hanging out with the hoomans.

Looking more likely I'll be here a while, so better make an #introduction...
Born in Calgary, Canada, then spent my teenage years in Rotorua, university (MBSc) at Vic in Wellington, a brief stint in post-quake Chch and now settled on #Rakiura at the southern end of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Work as the Technology Ranger for the #DOC #Kākāpō Recovery team, you'll often find me on remote predator-free islands around the country. Interested in #conservation #tech #photography #bikes and #nzpol.
