  2. Rakali, Australia's mighty native water rat

"...One third of the country's 60 rodent species going extinct or suffering massive reductions since European colonisation.

One of the key threats to rakali is being entangled in fishing line and nets, so you can actually report sightings of illegal fishing nets to CRIMFISH, or there are other authorities within your state...They are also predated on by dogs, cats and foxes, so the recommendations are to try and keep cats and dogs away from waterways where rakalis could be... it was important to ensure cars drive slowly around rakali habitats, particularly at night when it's harder to see and more rakalis are out and about. "

Extinction of Australian flora and fauna. It's always the same: Habitat erasure and extractive activities. Add roads, cars, pets, dogs, cats, foxes, weeds and dump the unwanted.

  6. Not new, but still brilliant. Nature adapts — and fast. Australia’s native water rats, also known as #rakali have figured out how to safely eat deadly #canetoads by surgically removing and feasting only on their hearts.

  14. Really nice walk around #Jerrabomberra Wetlands in #Canberra this evening. A #SpotlessCrake was showing well (just my second encounter) and there were two #Rakali (native water rats) in one of the channels. I've also included pictures of #AustralianPelicans and an #AustralasianDarter.

  19. Speaking of the water #rat in Australia. #Rakali is known to perform surgical precision to safely eat poisonous cane toads.

“The rats, which can grow to over 1kg, are the only mammal found to specifically target large toads, neatly dissecting the toads to eat their hearts and livers while avoiding the poisonous skin and glands.”
    🙌 amazing!
