Last month Greenpeace stuck a dead eye on Rakaia's big fish and the locals cried "vandalism!"
Well, Rakaia held it's famous fishing competition over the weekend. Four hundred people entered, and not a single fish was caught. It's the first time that's happened in the 40 years that the competition's been running.
The problem is mainly dairy, of course. Oversized water take permits reduce water flow, which increases water temperature, which kills fish. Gotta feed those pivot irrigators. Cram the fields with cows and the resulting nitrate pollution leaching into most of our waterways does the rest.
They. Didn't. Catch. One. Fish!

A group of quad bikers was attempting to cross the south side of the Rakaia River mouth today, and something went drastically wrong.
