We have Rainbow Bee-eaters in our area at the moment (I suspect they winter here), and I followed this one who was flying between two trees while on the hunt.

Some critters I photographed on campus on Wednesday.

I was in (to work) a little early today, so I wandered down to the ferry terminal to check in on the Rainbow Bee-Eaters.

Striated Pardalotes and Rainbow Bee-eaters this morning before work. They’re both nesting in the embankments on the river by the ferry terminal at work.

The Rainbow Bee-eaters are back for another breeding season. There's a pair that nest near the Ferry Terminal at work, so I popped down there today and was not disappointed.

Spring has most definitely sprung down by the ferry terminal at UQ today.
Rainbow Bee-eaters taking advantage of the warm afternoon.
(and yes, I do feel like a paparazzi now... hiding in the bushes with a long lens photographing, well, this...)

After finding the Buff-banded Rail chicks, I decided to continue on to check on the Rainbow Bee-eaters.
When I arrived, there was another person with camera there, and it turned out to be a fellow mastodonian!
The bee-eaters were mostly up high, but this one popped down in the shade briefly, providing a decent opportunity for an high-key shot.

Because I had the camera with me anyway from shooting the comet this morning, I went for a wander at lunchtime down to the ferry terminal to visit the Rainbow Bee-eaters again.
This time I was lugging the 200mm f/1.8L lens, with 2x teleconverter on it. It's shorter (400mm) than my regular birding lens, and also weighs twice as much, but I got a few decent shots all the same.

I had a hot tip there were nesting Rainbow Bee-eaters down by the ferry terminal at work. So at lunchtime I went for a wander, and the tipster was not wrong.

Beautiful day in Brisbane today. The sunshine really made these Rainbow Bee Eaters colours pop!

I went to Sir John Chandler Park this afternoon in the hope of seeing nesting Rainbow Bee-Eaters, but I was about a month too late.
However, all was not lost, there was this juvenile. Somewhat muted colours on the younger birds, and the overcast conditions didn't help a great deal.

Here are more photos of the visiting Rainbow Bee-Eater in the Melaleuca (paperbark). (It came back.)
It's been a bit warm, so its mouth and wings have opened to catch the breeze.
Front and back view, showing its colourful plumage.

Leapfrog
The classical flight shot of the #rainbowbeeeater is the front-on, wings-spread ‘portrait’. I thought this side-on perspective offered the viewer something a little unusual. I’m fond of the lighting in this image. The subject and perch are shrouded in shadow, but the distant background is being lit by sunlight, which has created a contrast between cool and warm colours, which I find quite attractive.

We visited a park well known for having nesting Rainbow Bee-Eaters this afternoon and were not disappointed :)
Only one pair today, but that was enough to get some pretty photos of them.
The male is the one with the longer tail plumes.

Sorry / Not Sorry, I couldn't resist posting another Rainbow Bee-Eater shot.
They really are very pretty.

On the way home, on the recommendation from Dr Nick, I stopped off at Sir John Chandler Park to photograph Rainbow Bee-eaters, and I'm very glad I did.
