OK, I take it back, the CBC’s is still a poorly written article that unfairly makes it sound like the workers were on strike. Compare the first two paragraphs from the current CBC article versus the current BBC article on the issue.

A better article on the stoppage than CBC had before.
The previous made it sound like the workers had stopped the trains, when it was actually the two companies in tandem locking out the employees at the same time. That has never been done before.
Only now are the #Teamsters at #CNRail putting in their 72hr strike notice. The Teamsters at #CPKC already have done that but have not actually launched a strike.

The disruption of rail services across Canada and into the US is going to be a huge disruption in NA industry. My forecast has been that gov would let it progress past the strike/lockout deadline and a few days past, tops.
Expecting back-to-work legislation and binding arbitration before next week.

MAJOR Canadian rail strike begins tonight. Same issues as the 2022 rail strike where Biden intervened against the union: brutal schedules that push sleep deprivation, seemingly random relocations, the works.A benefit of this is that tar sands "oil" by rail won't be able to move. Harmful effects (for which we need to blame the railroad bosses) include food shipments and water purification chemicals that may not move except possibly by truck.
Note that Canadian Pacific Kansas City declared a LOCKOUT starting tonight, and this declaration came prior to the strike notice! The lockout notice was issued Aug 9, the strike notice not until the past Sunday (August 11), and also that day Canadian National issued a lockout notice.
The strike notice means picket lines though, which other unions will not cross and any scabs should expect trouble crossing. Here in the US, the Teamsters-affiliated
Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen has instructed their members not to cross picket lines, and authorized them to refuse to operate any trains owned/run by the two offending Canadian railroads inside the US. -

A idyllic #daydream. You need to be able to afford the #railticket, have lots of time in case of delays, a back-up plan in case of cancellation and bus #routes where the #bus shows up on time. I love the idea but sadly this hasn't been my experience of #UK #PublicTransport, since about the #1970s. I look forward to when it is.

The thing is my new rep absolutely would listen to constituents who weren't donors. Former rep, less-so. And my new rep might have been able to reach out to my old rep, if I could have communicated with them.

It's like this, any effort by a governing body to override the voting rights of organized workers with legislation is strike breaking and union busting. Both parties, both branches are complicit in this case. The only answer rail workers needed from Dems is "we oppose and will fight all legislation that overrides the votes of rail workers"

I'm not going to assume the actions the rail workers will take will be a strike, per se, but I'm going to anticipate disruption of some kind.
The disruption will likely be painful - esp b/c the average US citizen hates feeling deprived and disrupted in *any* way. This CBS news item from November gives me an idea of what to expect.

3. The union bureaucracy bears responsibility for this situation because it repeatedly violated clear instructions by the rank-and-file and sabotaged their struggle. The rail unions worked with Biden and the carriers to try and ram through the contract that workers rejected. Instead of lifting a finger against the danger of congressional intervention, they used it to try to convince workers to approve the deal.
