Baltic rail operators launch joint train procurement for Rail Baltica.

Baltic states rail operators announced a joint public procurement for trains to run on the European-gauge Rail Baltica line currently under construction.

Rail Baltica will connect Tallinn, Pärnu, Riga, Panevėžys, Kaunas, Vilnius and Warsaw.

Transport Minister Juras Taminskas said Lithuania has already laid its first tracks.

Good : :elron: Elron finally submits their schedule data of domestic trains to european schedule data available in DB Navigator or Rail Planner.
Bad : They're not submitting arrival times but only departure times so that all the perfectly aligned transfers in Estonia won't be shown.

Seriously, Elron has perfect digital schedule and real-time data ... Why this fail ?

Edit : Already their own GTFS feed is broken, so it's not a HAFAS problem.

#FOSSRail day three : Today's mission is crossing the Baltics via Riga, Valga and Tapa to Narva before leaving European ground into the eastern direction.

After a short walk out in the cold, at first a :ltg: Skoda EJ 575 will bring me on my first few kilometers towards the Baltic's Express route for half an hour. The train is comfortable, snacks and drinks are provided at seat and the tables are perfectly fine for working on my laptop.

Arriving in Kaisiadorys, #FOSSRail day two ends. 900 km further east and five countries crossed so far, I'm prepared to get up early tomorrow morning in order to catch the Baltic express connection bringing me across Latvia to the Estonian-Russian border.

Departed on time from Warszawa Centralna.

Next stop: Mockava (Lithuania), for a change onto the train to Vilnius. This route has no direct trains yet: Lithuania has the soviet track gauge while Poland uses standard gauge, and there are no dual-gauge trains on the route.

There is good hope however that in 5 years #RailBaltica will start service on the more common 'standard gauge'. Track building has started across the Baltic states, and the first rails have already been laid down in Lithuania.

Why Poland is becoming less central European and more Baltic.

Thanks to energy and security concerns, its centre of gravity is shifting north.

We will definitely explore the Baltics a bit more thoroughly as soon as #RailBaltica is done. What a fun trip Hamburg, Berlin, Warsaw, Vilnius, Riga, Tallin, Helsinki and back would be. (I know, Helsinki is still a bit of a stretch goal)
