RAGBRAI = (Des Moines) Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa. One week, camping in towns across the state along the way. Starts with one tire in the Missouri River on the western border, ends with one tire in the Mississippi River on the eastern border. Much pie consumed.
I didn't know the ride would be going by my parents' house when I booked this trip home, but RAGBRAI is genuinely Iowa at its finest.

Took the world's smallest cowbell to cheer on RAGBRAI riders as they rolled into Dubuque this morning. Lots of shouts of "more cowbell!".

The town pop reached its peak in 1950 at about 3500. With riders and support visitors, the population is expected to swell to more than 40,000 this weekend sprawled out over every available patch of grass. The city previously hosted in 1976, 1983, 1994, 2000, 2008, & 2013

RAGBRAI day 0 notes for the bus ride:
Onawa was home to a prisoner-of-war (POW) camp for several dozen captured German soldiers from 1944-1946. The state overall hosted over 25,000 POWs during WWII, with Camps Algona and Clarinda being the two main bases.

#RAGBRAI isn’t just a bike ride—it’s the largest bike tour in the world, a rolling city powered by legs, laughter, and the open road. Over seven days, thousands of riders cross #Iowa end to end, from the Missouri River to the Mississippi, turning quiet highways into a week-long festival of sweat, stories, and small-town magic.

This particular route began in Council Bluffs and flowed east through Harlan, Perry, and Des Moines, where the skyline briefly replaced cornfields.

This was my 20th year of riding #RAGBRAI It was on paper one of the easiest, but due to the weather conditions (humidity, headwinds and high overnight temperatures) was one of the most difficult I’ve ever ridden. This story does a great job describing the weather conditions for this year’s ride. Photo courtesy of Dan Verrips -

Last day of #RAGBRAI #bicycle trip across #Iowa.
Just before the two largest hills on the entire route!
Climbing out of the #TurkeyRiver valley and then a quick drop to the #MississippiRiver at #Guttenberg.

#RAGBRAI LII Day 4 To Iowa Falls A heat emergency, so 22,000 dummies like me biked 76 miles. Out by 5:30 - doing it in the dark helps. At the finish I'm taking full advantage of the mister fans.

#ragbrai LII 🚲2025🧵 Day 0 Orange City, IA 7 or more Westbound busses arrived late last night. Many more coming today. Heavy thunderstorms overnight. ☕️ is acceptable. Grabbing a burrito at the Landsmeer Golf clubhouse. It's going to be a great tire dip day.

@max_in_somer @ai6yr I agree that my estimates are probably too optimistic. Most casual bikers on city bikes out for midnight dumplings aren't going to go 12 mph if they're packed that tightly together.
But yes, the sheer volume of pavement that such a crowd occupies is huge. For large recreational rides like #RAGBRAI, with 15,000-25,000 riders on a typical day, you can watch a steady stream of riders leave town in the morning from 5 am to past 9 am.

Little local ice cream shops are a real treat of RAGBRAI.

Day 1 of RAGBRAI is in the books. Early morning dense fog eventually gave way to clearing skies. Not too hilly, not too hot.
