  1. "He had wild hair and wore jeans. He was #American and #Jewish. He had a #camera.

That was enough to trigger #surveillance by the notorious #secretpolice of #communist #Romania, the #Securitate.

Now, 41 years after #photojournalist #EdwardSerotta boldly stepped behind the #IronCurtain, we can see just how obsessed the #Romanians were with him, thanks to a short #documentary by renowned #Romanian #director #RaduJude and #historian #AdrianCioflâncă.

“Plan contraplan/Shot Reverse Shot,” which had its world premiere at the #Berlinale international #film festival last month, gives equal time to #Serotta’s reminiscences about Romania in the 1980s, and to the Securitate’s observations of him."

  2. TIL the ending of Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin is bullshit. In the film, the sailors on the ship convince the approaching Tsarist squadron to join the Revolution and everyone cheers, crisis averted, Revolution picking up steam!

IRL, the mutineers sought asylum in Constanța, Romania. This was granted by King Carol I. The few Russians who attempted to return home were executed or sent to Siberia.

There's a great article on the actual events, Radu Jude's short film recalling/satirizing the situation, and the ill-fated Spomenik to commemorate it.
