  3. When will I learn? I'm playing around with #craiyon and it just can't wrap is tin brain around creating a picture of polymath #engineer #technicalwriter #RufusTurner in a logo. Here's a photo of Turner and the following are images of the logos. The only way to get a correct image was to use the qualifier #black or #blackman. Why is there an assumption in these modern times that all engineers are #white? #BlackMastodon #RadioHistory #wireless 1/3

  8. Found out about her while researching a blog post about old Jewish #cimbalom players from New York... Regina Spielman (née Szegeti?) born in Máramarossziget, Hungary in 1885, lived in Budapest for a time and possibly Kolomyyia; came to NY in 1923. Played on the radio a bit in NY in the 1920s with a family trio. Apparently related to the violinist Joseph Szigeti. Lived in the Bronx most of her life and died in 1966.

  9. There's too little info to make much of it, unless I find another source later, but as a cimbalist I'm curious about this female #cimbalom player Regina Spielman who was active in NY in the mid-1920s. Just found these two passing mentions of her playing on the radio in 1924 with, I think, her husband Solomon and brother-in-law Louis? No idea of the genre or repertoire either without some more investigation.

  10. It’s going to be a while before I find a QSL card for my #VintageQSLcard collection that I prize more highly than this one: A Radio Caroline QSL card postmarked 1967. #RadioHistory #QSLcard #RadioCaroline #Radio #PirateRadio #PirateRadioStation #AMradio #KE0FFTpirateRadio #KE0FFT

  11. From the #RSGB on FB: “The centenary of the world’s very first trans-global two-way #radio communication is this Friday 18 October.

To commemorate this historic contact, special callsigns are active, and awards and #QSLcards will be available. On Friday, radio amateurs will also be recreating and re-enacting the first contact between Goyder and Bell.”

  12. The #BBC’s Arabic #radio service went off the air after 85 years. So did its radio broadcasts in 10 other languages, incl Persian, Chinese and Hindi.

They blamed years of below-inflation license fee freezes imposed by the government, and increasing costs:

  13. One more thing to share this morning: this year I curated a digital exhibit for American Archive of Public Broadcasting about the 10-yr radio station of Riverside Church NYC. A decade of high-def recordings are available: public affairs, jazz, sermons, civil rights news coverage, & much more. Very fun project to work on!
