  7. Test Transmissions from Lampertheim?

    According to AmateurRadio.com, having started on Tuesday, if according to schedule, USAGM would conduct shortwave test transmissions

    from the historic Lampertheim site in Hesse, Germany, which formerly served as a primary broadcasting node for Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty (RFE/RL).

    The article sees the tests as a harbinger of a temporary Lampertheim reappearance on shortwave, while the shortwave transmitter site in Kuwait is being upgraded.

    That, of course, doesn’t suggest that American foreign radio agency USAGM has plans to bring shortwave transmissions back to its pre-Trump administration scale, but rather that the agency will focus on certain target areas, mostly considered enemies of the U.S., like Iran.

    As for sources, AmateurRadio.com points to the HFCC’s latest update of A26 schedules. According to those, one could expect long hours of Lampertheim on air, but that doesn’t have to be the case, especially not if in English. Anyway, the HFCC schedule concerning the USAGM (and they are all scheduled in English there):

    5860, 7370 and 9950 kHz from 0700 to 13:00 UTC, targeting northeastern Russia (regions 19 and 20);
    12035 kHz from 07:00 to 13:00 UTC, targeting the most western and southwestern Russian regions (29;
    13710 kHz from 07:00 to 13:00 UTC, targeting the Middle Eastern region 39;
    15730 kHz from 07:00 to 11:00 UTC, targeting Russia’s region 19;
    17880 kHz from 07:00 to 13:00 UTC, targeting region 29;
    and 13760 kHz from 08:00 to 11:00 UTC, also targeting region 29.

    The schedule also shows other USAGM shortwave stations, among them Udorn station in northeastern Thailand, but as said before, don’t expect hours of broadcasting. It will probably be more like minutes, if at all, if the Voice of America relay in Botswana is a sample to go by.

    Iran is also among the USAGM’s target areas, but for transmissions from Kuwait and Thailand.

  9. Slopaganda-Krieg

    Anschlussfähig an westliche Internetkultur

Zerbombte Schulen würden in Plastikbausteine verwandelt.

Der US-Filmemacher Drew Ponder mit Sympathien für Bernie Sanders beispielsweise produziert nun eigene Videos wie „Strait Outta Iran“ und „What Shall We Do with the Drunken Hegseth?“.

  10. White House nominates new Head for USAGM

    The White House has noninated Sarah B. Rogers, currently the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, to be Chief Executive Officer of the United States Agency for Global Media. Her nomination was sent to the Senate on Thursday.

    A slightly gleeful Yahoo article notes that

    [t]wo-time failed gubernatorial candidate Lake was removed from the role after U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth, a Reagan administration nominee, ruled on Saturday that she had been running the agency in violation of the law, labeling her a “de facto” CEO.

    The BBC apparently reacts to the current internet blackout in Iran. The frequency list was posted on bbc.com on January 13.
    Update, Jan 18:
    See today’s edition of Shortwave Bulletin (SWB 2097), page 6, for transmission sites. The times given there are Tehran Time (UTC + 3.5 h).

    Radio Farda

    Radio Farda (or Radio Liberty) published a press release on January 10, explicitly citing Iran’s internet blackout as the reason for the decision to get back to the shortwave bands. According to the British DX Club’s (BDXC) "Middle East on Shortwave" update of January 14, Radio Farda resumed broadcasting on January 10, two days ahead of schedule (times and frequencies there, page 4).

  19. This is part of the reason Trump wanted USAID shut down.

    Because some media it funded like Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty were exposing the pro-Russia corruption of his friends like Viktor Orbán in Hungary.

    Whatever Trumpists think ”liberty” means these days, it clearly doesn’t involve small countries fighting back against larger, nuclear armed, ones.

  21. I've just donated to this fundraiser to support Voice of America workers and contributors, who are affected by funding cuts and legal battles. Many of the people affected are under actual danger of deportation to hostile foreign regimes, who will attack them because of their journalism work.

    VOA / RFA / RFE is, for many places around the world, the only way for people to get real information about their own country. And, now more than ever, the work VOA did is becoming relevant in America as well. The anti journalism playbook used against VOA is also coming to American domestic media.

    For techies: the donation here also supports staff from the Open Technology Fund, which sponsors many censorship circumvention technologies (such as Tor) and which also has a FOSS fund. They were also defunded along with VOA.

  22. Radio News: Argentina, China, Czechia, Germany, Netherlands, Spain

    Argentina

    Radio Argentina al Exterior, aka Argentina to the World currently keeps us quite up to date on its website, and – in Italian – also on WRMI. The English programs are also broadcast via WRMI, but unfortunately, only the second half of the actually sixty-minutes program. You only notice that it is really a newly recorded one when Fernando Farías, its host, mentiones a cetain day in history, or a birthday, etc..
    The Chinese program has long disappeared from the WRMI schedule, but is available with almost regular new podcasts of about one hour each.

    China / Vatican

    Vatican Radio’s future on shortwave may be uncertain, but the shortwave signal from Santa Maria di Galeria reaches Chengdu in western China with certainty.

    Czech Republic

    Radio Liberty (Radio Svoboda) is still on air from Viesintos in Lithuania, on 1386 kHz, during the evening hours. These are followed by a relay service of Radio Ukraine. According to Radio Liberty’s April-15 news release, their time on air would be from 18:30 to 21:00 UTC or 21:30 to midnight Moscow time, and therefore include Music on Svoboda, an hour with a variety of music played. That would be from 20:00 to 21:00 UTC, but if Radio Liberty is off, and followed by the Radio Ukraine relay service by then, new music editions are still available online every Monday.

    Germany

    Deutsches DRM-Forum 2025, a German-branch meeting of the Digital Radio Mondiale Association, was held in Brandenburg State’s Königs Wusterhausen, not far from southeastern Berlin and near Berlin Brandenburg Airport, on Monday and Tuesday this week. The DRM Education Project mentioned in the press release probably includes things like distance learning, in "Integria", which seems to have its place somewhere between historic Australian "School of the Air" and the internet of nowadays, in places where the latter isn’t easily available.

    Spain, The Netherlands

    Europe has seen some tropospheric propagation this month, as reported by El Radioescucha and by Peter’s DX Corner.
    Summer hasn’t even started yet, so there will probably many more of these exotic days on VHF/FM.

  23. #EU will provide emergency funds to help keep #RadioFreeEurope afloat after US cuts

    May 20, 2025

    "The European Union agreed Tuesday to provide emergency funds to help keep Radio Free Europe afloat after the Trump administration stopped grants to the pro-democracy media outlet, accusing it of promoting a news agenda with a liberal bias.

    "Radio Free Europe / #RadioLiberty started broadcasting during the #ColdWar. Its programs are aired in 27 languages in 23 countries across Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East. Its lawyers have been fighting the administration in court.

    "EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the bloc’s foreign ministers had agreed to a 5.5-million-euro ($6.2 million) contract to 'support the vital work of Radio Free Europe.' The 'short-term emergency funding' is a 'safety net' for #IndependentJournalism, she said.

    "Kallas said the EU would not be able to fill the organization’s funding gap around the world, but that it can help the broadcaster to 'work and function in those countries that are in our neighborhood and that are very much dependent on news coming from outside.' "
