G4 (Severe) Geomagnetic Storm Watch for 20 January UTC-Day
published: Monday, January 19, 2026 15:37 UTCA G4 (Severe) geomagnetic storm watch is in effect for the 20 January UTC-day due to Earth-arrival of a coronal mass ejection (CME). The CME blasted from the Sun on 18 Jan, in association with an energetic R3 (Strong) solar flare from a sunspot region near center-disk, and is anticipated to arrive at Earth as early as late 19 Jan EST to early 20 Jan. While the G4 Watch is out for the 20 Jan UTC-day, geomagnetic storm levels could range from G1-G3 (Minor-Moderate) upon CME arrival later on 19 Jan EST. CME passage is expected to continue through 20 Jan, but conditions are likely to weaken later in the day. G1 levels remain possible on 21 Jan due to residual CME related effects. Forecasters have a fair measure of confidence in timing and of CME arrival at Earth.

"Because the sunspot is behind the edge of the solar disk, the flare was partially #eclipsed. It was probably even stronger than it appeared. 'X8.7' is almost certainly an underestimate of the flare's true strength.
"Extreme ultraviolet radiation from the flare ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere, causing a deep shortwave #RadioBlackout over the Americas. Ham radio operators, aviators and mariners may have noticed a sudden loss of signal at all frequencies below 30 MHz.
"Subatomic debris from this event might soon reach Earth, guided toward our planet by the #ParkerSpiral. Also, a #CME might be in the offing. Stay tuned for updates!

Bueno, en el Sol acaba de ocurrir una erupción solar clase X8.7 hace apenas un rato, siguiendo otras dos flares clase X1.7 y X1.2, la alerta por correo de esta última no ha llegado aún. Estos eventos fueron detectados por el radiotelescopio e-callisto del OALM y han ocasionado un type II y type III radio burst que son básicamente, señales de radio intensas, generadas por la aceleración por onda de choque de los electrones en la corona solar, que muchas veces acompañan las eyecciones de masa coronal o CMEs . El proyecto e-Callisto es una red internacional de estaciones terrenas con radiotelescopios de bajo costo que observan la actividad solar las 24hs distribuidos por todas partes del mundo entre 45 y 870MHz y que buscan detectar estos bursts o explosiones en radio. Esto ayuda a caracterizar la la actividad solar y en casos de eyecciónes de masa coronal, ayudar a determinar la velocidad de las partículas que vienen hacia la Tierra.

"LASCO coronagraph imagery is updated and shows a full halo coronal mass ejection (CME) that is Earth directed. The main bulk of plasma seems to be heading north, however a noteworthy impact past our planet is likely within 72 hours and may trigger a geomagnetic storm once it arrives. Energetic particles did begin to reach our planet almost 3 hours after the flare event and a minor (S1) to moderate (S2) radiation storm is currently in progress."
