#Radiation measurements on a recent #flight I was on, it is interesting to see that immediately after takeoff, the rate drops significantly and only goes up higher again once you gain altitude. I guess it's due to the proximity to the ground and all that concrete and #rock #geology near the surface and then the #CosmicRays in the upper #atmosphere.
There was one #HighEnergy event on the next flight. Probably due to a cosmic ray.

My gamma spectrometer arrived yesterday. Unsurprisingly but thrilling, the smoke detector has Americium-241, which falls off to background levels (160 CPM) a half a meter away. Nothing else has shown gamma activity. I have some small element samples on order that should be interesting. I am curious whether it's worth it looking for thrift shop finds (uranium ceramics, radium watches) or if they are all routinely screened these days. #science #radioactivity #gamma #americium #uranium #RadiaCode

found this one funny saucer at a thrift store a while back with some really bumpy protruding bits that measured well above background. today i found the exact same model saucer but worn down at another thrift store and it measured much closer to background. wonder where all that material ended up

A little while ago, YouTube pushed a video at me[0], about #radioactive things being sold on Amazon. I found that something that looked an awful like one of them was available[1]. It has quite a number of claims, such as generating negative ions (OK, that can happen), energising creams and oils for better absorption(?), energising food to "neutralise unwanted elements"(??) something something bioenergetic field of our body(???), and that you should use it on your body and face to rejuvenate the skin(???!).
So I got one and put it next to my #Radiacode scintillation detector. Long story slightly short, it's similar to a Geiger counter but works differently and only detects x-rays and gamma radiation, no alpha or beta. However, almost all alpha and beta emissions are accompanied by a gamma emission also, and it can see that and plot it on a spectrum to work out what is doing the emitting.
It ends up that it contains Thorium-232, and probably emits more #radiation than is acceptable for something that makes no mention of being radioactive - be aware that I'm not sure exactly how the rules for that sort of thing work. Where background radiation where I am sits around 0.05µSv/h, this ends up being over thirty times that, 1.50µSv/h or so. Not a huge number, but not something I'd keep under my tongue.
Being primarily an alpha emitter, there's little risk unless you put it inside you (don't), but it's also not something I would want to leave in an unsafe place. Additionally, in the video they get one that has a small hole at the end. Getting thorium into your food would not be ideal.

I tested salt alternative with my #RadiaCode 102 #gamma ray spectrometer. While it showed 60cpm more than the 140cpm background level, the K-40 1.46MeV line (experienced in 10% of its decays via electron capture to Ar-40) was not significant. Possibly, background levels of other ingredients in the salt substitute had a higher level of common uranium/thorium decay products. The Radiacode may not be sensitive enough for a definitive answer. #radiation #physics #science #hobby

Radiological adventures without leaving the house: a whetstone in my kitchen and the brick on my fireplace are distinctly higher than background sources (2-3×). The spectrum looks a lot like the local background, so presumably, it is distributed low concentration actinides (U, Th) and daughter products like everywhere else, just slightly stronger. #gamma #radioactivity #science #RadiaCode
