  1. Woo hoo another #TipOfDay. It’s been awhile. This is about Instant Pot and racks and even boiled eggs easy to peel. After years of being happy to get 8 or so perfect boiled eggs in the 5-5-5 method, finally branched out to, get THIS, 15, by using racks inside the IP to double stack. #InstantPot #Eggs #Racks #Cooking

Tricky to stack so they don’t touch and potentially crack. I cook so eggs have bright golden yellow yolk with no gray tinge and not over-under cook. I now mix and match a 1” tall silicone rack with a tall wire rack above. Turn the eggs to point away from each other to make sure none touch in process. Photos current racks and the unused ones nearby in the basin used for cooling eggs in water and ice afterwards.

  2. I saw an article today that was talking about some cloud #hyperscaler - Google, I think - switching to a high-voltage DC power system in anticipation of supporting #racks with a power density of 1 MW.

A #megawatt, in a standard rack? I know Nvidia's selling GPU racks at 120 kW, which is much more than a traditional rack can handle, and there's talk about 250 kW, but this is 4 times more than even that. It seems ... impractical.

Doing a few calculations - a 42U standard rack is 600mm wide, a meter deep, and 2 meters high, for a total volume of 1.2 m^3. If that was a solid block of mild steel, it would mass ~9500 kg. In round terms, 1MW input would be able to raise the temperature of that almost-ten-tonne steel block from the freezing point of water to the boiling point of water... in one second flat.

The cooling requirements for a system like this would be prolific, but I think it would require some never-seen-in-computing changes as well, like a "thermal crowbar". Just as a crowbar circuit shorts the power to cause a breaker to trip when some failure condition is detected, you would need something to immediately kill power to such a rack if the cooling system was impaired at all. You don't have time for this to take ten seconds!

They're also talking about it being an 800VDC system, so you need 1250A. For that, you would need a copper busbar with a cross-sectional area of more than 500 mm^2...

    This doesn't smell right.

  4. Anybody have experience with these NavePoint #switch #racks ? Seem to be rated pretty well and quite budget friendly, especially for being swing gate style. Just wondering if they are of a decent build quality.

Don't forget that 1 psu power all the mini pc project you been wanting to do... Now I'm conflicted and thinking about abandoning the whole damn thing to save my marriage. 😆

  8. Rocky 1543R Waffle Wednesday: staff is in the study saying bad words as he discovers his pretty 9u open rack is 1mm narrower than his UniFi PDU with the ears fitted. So plan B, mount PDU behind by flipping rack studs around. Staff then adopted the PDU and shifted all the loads from the illegal octopus connection to the PDU.

No magic smoke spilled. No fireballs! Staff still has all his hair@but I’m afraid he’ll go lame before tea is served. #computers #racks #cable #snakenest

  9. Anyone remembers seeing a comparison about bike #racks in the public space, showing which were bad and why? I think it might have been on #GCN (or #GCNTech?) but totally unsure. It's also fairly recent, like 1-2 months at most..
