Went down a weird rabbit hole…
When I was a kid, my brother and I used to go into my mom’s purse to sneak her favorite gum: Clorets. We loved it
Turns out Clorets was designed/marketed as “breath deodorant.”
Turns out the bad-breath ingredient is called “Actizol,” which includes chlorophyll. Yeah. From plants.
Turns out chlorophyll is used as a food additive for green coloring. Including in the liquor banned in many countries, absinthe.
You’re welcome.

This morning's meander taught me that the Saharan Desert is more rock than sand, and that there is ancient rock art there.
Also, I can't seem to get my brain to grasp how sand works. Like, I get the individual processes, but the gestalt feels beyond me. I was trying to imagine where our mountains go as sand. The Gulf of Mexico?
Also, also, "myriad" used to be an actual-factual math term.

Sometimes I learn a thing, and I'm astonished that I never knew it. Today's example is that Russia was settled by Norse Vikings using the rivers for trade and piracy. How did I not know this?
And! there are a LOT of indigenous peoples there, including Chechans.

From the category of "how did I end up HERE?": On #WikiTree, we use official location names at the time of the event. The #WikiTreeBEE browser extension will try to retrieve those for a given date from #Wikidata. I started recording forced laborers from #Poland, who had to work in my Black Forest home-town. I generated the location name and had it checked by the ladies from WikiTree's Poland Project. We (all neither Polish, nor #Polish speakers) discuss, if the Russian Empire, to which Poland belonged back then, should be translated as "Imperium Rosyjskie" or "Cesarstwo Rosyjskie". The tendency is towards the latter. But Polish #Wikipedia has their article titled as the other one, so I'm reluctant on any Wikidata edits in the other direction. Then I discover, that half of the talk page https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyskusja:Imperium_Rosyjskie is actually about having the name shifted towards the other one. The last line of the talk page delivers a (for me) sufficiently convincing reason: the Polish constitution of 1815 uses the other expression. So now, I pulled myself together and added "Cesarstwo Rosyjskie" as "Official Name" in "Polish" to Wikidata and stated the constitution as reference. Let's see, if I get away with it.

Today I was going a bit down the "alternatives to #google that don't support #RTL" #RabbitHole and I've found out there's an alomst-but-not-quite-ready PR for #cryprpad RTL support:
https://github.com/cryptpad/cryptpad/pull/1934#issuecomment-3490813169Calling all cryptpad geeks: let's make this happen: There's a large intersection between people/orgs under surveillance and those who need RTL languages. Let's help them stop using #google forms/docs/etc.

Backstage Burrow — How Humans First Locked Down Their Tunes (Part 2)
Ep7-2026Welcome back to the Backstage Burrow for Episode 7! In this episode, we run zoomies through the history of Western music notation to explore how a chaotic need for standardization sparked a brilliant visual revolution. From Charlemagne’s aggressive 800 AD decree forcing the rise of "neumes"—small squiggles and dots used as memory aids—to Guido of Arezzo hyping up the drawing of actual lines on a page to unlock sight-reading, we examine how medieval innovators completely transformed the underlying framework of human creativity.
We also trace how the mind-melting complexity of florid organum and the medieval motet forced trailblazers to eventually assign precise mathematical values directly to the physical shapes of noteheads. By completely unshackling the human mind from rigid oral traditions, these rule-breaking musical breakthroughs gave composers the ultimate green light to innovate, stacking harmonies and rhythms like never before. So keep your ears pricked, your paws tapping, and let's hop right down the rabbit hole into Part 2 of the wild history of sheet music!

Seventeen tabs open for this writing session. Slavic mythology is fascinating.

Wieder ins #rabbithole geraten.

This is very niche nerd stuff, but I love this lorem ipsum history / research / correction video.
Even some of the lorem ipsum generators have corrected their backstory on the subject! -
#rabbithole

@thelonelyghost A certain major cloud vendor's #Kubernetes implementation, and what happens when one must deal with both the "old" and "new" authn/authz schemes simultaneously in a cluster. It prefers new, but for best results, configure both for identical results, or at least as close as practical.
It wasn't our own smoking #footguns at the bottom of the #rabbithole, but at least there was a #deterministic answer that didn't require #vendor contact.

If I get to the bottom of this #rabbithole and I don't find our very own #footguns I shall be very disappointed.
Because that means I shall have to talk to the #vendor and that seldom turns out well.
Maybe the behavior is documented. Technically. Piecewise in several different places, one of which is in a locked file cabinet in a planning office that is only open for one hour at lunch on alternate Thursdays.

Oh my #homelab. You're such a deep #rabbithole. I just wanted to do a #NFS mount in a #LXC container. Now I'm debugging how LXC configuration autogenerates #apparmor profiles.

I am so lost.
The My Little Pony Fan Musik rabbit hole is even deeper than I imagined in my worst nightmares... 4h runtime and still no duplicate in sight... What the hell... And most of them are so damn great ...Sorry, but it is MLP for next week I guess...

Backstage Burrow Ep6-2026: How Humans First Locked Down Their Tunes (Part 1)
Hi everybunny! Welcome back to the Backstage Burrow! 🐰🌾 Today, we are running zoomies through time to uncover the wild, weird, and wonderful roots of how humans first figured out how to lock down their tunes in a tangible way. Long before you could just drop a link or print sheet music, passing down songs meant relying entirely on a high-stakes game of oral tradition and human memory—from intense apprenticeships in India to 1,000-year-old court traditions in Japan. But what happens when ancient civilizations try to "freeze" sound onto Sumerian stone tablets, Chinese bells, or Greek inscriptions? 📜🗿
In this episode, we dive down the rabbit hole to explore the mind-blowing difference between relative and absolute pitch, and we’ll tease the massive Medieval crisis that hit when an empire demanded everyone sing their religious chants the same way. How do you invent a code for something you can only hear? Grab your snacks and tune in to see how we trapped sound waves—and stick around for Part 2 to meet a frustrated Italian monk who helped change human creativity forever! ✨#musichistory #musictechnology #backstageburrow #rabbithole #ancientartifacts #musicnotation
