Hey, #editors! My #colleague @lepoole says #quoting #song #lyrics in #books & other #publications is a minefield. She should know: She's a magnet for lyrics. 🧲 In her blog post for The Quad, she tells you what you need to know: https://quadlings.com/quoting-song-lyrics-a-minefield/

@madalex @js: My favourite file name for a file to delete is:
-rf <Ctrl-C>
Because it requires every level of #quoting:
* Application level quoting by prefixing the file name with ./ so that rm doesn't take -rf as option.
* Shell quoting by #escaping or quoting the blank.
* Input level quoting by pressing usually <Ctrl-V> (Emacsish: <Ctrl-Q>) before <Ctrl-C> to be able to enter a literal <Ctrl-C>.(That's something you just don't unlearn once it's in your brain. 🤓 )

I only quote others the better to quote myself.

I’m not sure if anyone has ever quoted any of my toots. Probably not. Would I get a notification if it would happen? Simply using a link to my toot probably doesn’t trigger anything on my side.

I just got confused why some post are using the "quote" feature, but seems like they do run the 4.5.0 nightly build.
So the feature is right around the corner. Not sure if I will use it but I will give it a try at least.

Hello anyone...What is "quoting" ?
I thought it was introducing a topic and maybe giving my own opinion. Is it more than that ?

Quoting is coming to mastodon.social and mastodon.online next week. And then available later on for everyone else.

So, there is now a setting "Who can quote" in my Mastodon preferences. It was promised that the feature was "optional".
The "options" available for "Who can quote":
- Everyone
- Followers and mentioned users
- Only mentioned users
No setting available to prevent this toxic discussion hijacking crap.
As always, #Mastodon gGmbH and specifically @Gargron demonstrate their lack of any reliable integrity.

Andrew Bruce Davidson, Scottish minister, on Job’s defense against accusers (31:13-15). Job’s position couldda allowed him to despise the complaints of servants, except they were persons with rights, children of an avenging God.
Could we stand a shift of burden to the employer not to cause a complaint? What kind of business would that be?
How can you treat those who work for you, or supply you with services, as persons with rights?

About That #OutofContext #Quote(s) from #WhippingGirl That #AntiTrans #Activists Relentlessly Share.
There are few things more #cowardly than #quoting someone out of context. It implies that you took the time to pore over that person’s #work and, rather than seriously engage with their #ideas, you chose to #smear them instead.

That feeling when you forget to close a quote in bash, and bash waits patiently for you to close that stupid quote, but you don't realize it, and you go "WTF is taking so long?" and then you realize your mistake, and you go 🤦.
Yeah, that happened, just now. :madjoy:

Damn, visiting friends over on #disabilityTwitter, who largely have not migrated as a bloc — maybe because of #search, or #quoting, or longstanding connections
And things are much more grim. The calming conversation I see here is healthy, but needed cries for action against injustice there is marked
Maybe people want to avoid that, but it means abandoning #disabled people, who fought for a place that works for their needs
I miss #disability #DisabilityJustice

some folks miss #quoting à la twitter etc.
what i miss in #fediverse is more useful stats about a user in their profile:
- percentage of boosts in the user's timeline;
- average length of user's toots in words per toot or chars per toot;
- a short ordered list of tags most used by the user;
- a short ordered list of languages either specified by the user or detected by their instance… -
I've only been on #Calckey for a week and am already discovering several great, rather critical features I miss on #Mastodon. This note could also be a guide for #Twitter newcomers: Why choose Calckey over Mastodon?
1. Quote notes: If you miss quote-tweeting, this might be just the right choice for you. #QT #QRT #quoting #quotetweet
2. Full-text search: Apparently, you can search full-text through the whole fediverse. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but there are clearly many results from elsewhere, not only Miss-/Calckey.) Can be useful. #fulltextsearch
3. Adding users to lists without following them. (If you want to separate your fields of interest or whatever, this is rather essential.)
4. #Antennas: Following hashtags in a separate view. (Haven't tried it yet, sounds useful.)
5. Polls: Option to select multiple choices. There is also an option to add more than 4 choices when creating a poll.
6. More than 4 info fields in profile. (Not quite essential, but still.)
7. You can be a cat. (Doesn't need any further explanation.) -

CW: Quote posting is incompatible with the "Edit" feature. Mastodon has one, Twitter has the other, but nobody can have both if we care about truthiness
When people ask for the ability to quote posts _and_ the ability to edit posts, I think it shows their brains have been broken by using Twitter for years. For journalists — whose job it is to care about historical accuracy of text they're reporting on — it's a sign they're being lazy or disingenuous, so shame on them for crying that they want to have their cake and eat it.
Truthiness matters. People on Twitter asked for years for the ability to edit tweets. Mastodon gave us the "Edit" button. Fantastic! This comes at the cost of negating the utility of quote-posting, since the author can see your quote and edit what they wrote. The reason to quote is to provide context. But, if that context is mutable then it diminishes our trust in the quote and thus removes its semantic value. (Sure, Mastodon shows if a toot as been edited and lets us see previous versions, but this is lost in a world of clickbait headlines and mainstream media articles that embed toots/tweets).
For the sake of clear communication and community safety, we shouldn't give abusers, haters, bad actors, *-phobes, scammers, gaslighters, liars (or all of the above; for convenience let's say "politicians") the ability to change what they said after they've been quoted.
Make a screenshot. The original author can't edit that.

A suggestion on how mastodon might handle #quoting:
If you reply to a post AND subsequently boost your own reply, then you are given an option to add an attachment to your reply which contains a link, with preview, to the original post.
Further replies will still be replies to your (boosted) reply.
This preserves the conversational threading, while still allowing you to present something to your followers with a recommendation or other context.

Isn’t it an impressive display of capabilities that the demand for #quoting comes weeks or even mere days after joining Mastodon?
All those amateurs of Mastodon have been so wrong for so long and within a few hours the freshest professional rocket brains figure out what the main problem of Mastodon is.I’m sure they are the most welcome guests in every kitchen or shop floor.
