On a smaller scale, it involves the violent control of vulnerable territories. “This affects quilombola communities, indigenous territories, and outlying communities of major cities in the Amazon, where criminal factions collect taxes from merchants, impose curfews, and establish so-called ‘crime tribunals.’”
