It's important to remember that gender and sexuality labels are not personalities.
There are gentle and sensitive masculine people (for example), as well as tough and coarse feminine individuals. One's sense of style can be influenced by their identities, but not necessarily ruled by them.
You have so much freedom in choosing labels. Don't let stereotypes scare you away from one that feels right.

Whoso would be a man, must be a nonconformist. He who would gather immortal palms must not be hindered by the name of goodness, but must explore if it be goodness. Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind.

A quotation from Madeleine L'Engle
When I find myself hotly defending something, when I am, in fact, zealous, it is time for me to step back and examine whatever it is that has me so hot under the collar. Do I think it’s going to threaten my comfortable rut? Make me change and grow? — and growing always causes growing pains. Am I afraid to ask questions?

A quotation from Henry Commager
We cannot have a society half slave and half free; nor can we have thought half slave and half free. If we create an atmosphere in which men fear to think independently, inquire fearlessly, express themselves freely, we will in the end create the kind of society in which men no longer care to think independently or to inquire fearlessly.

The #Illusion of #News: How #Media Shapes Our #Reality
In today’s fast-paced #world, media is more powerful than ever. It’s the guiding force that shapes how we perceive the world around us—what’s right, what’s wrong, and what matters most. But is everything we see in the headlines the full #truth, or are we simply being sold a #story? Just like the world of The #Matrix, where nothing is as it seems, modern media has become a world of its own, full of illusions that bend our perception of reality.
The Power of the #Narrative
Media doesn’t just report facts—it shapes them. News outlets have the #power to edit, #frame, and present #information in a way that turns an event into a narrative. Think of how movies like #Inception warp our understanding of dreams, bending reality to their will. Similarly, the media molds #facts to fit a certain #agenda. Every #headline is carefully crafted, designed to stir #emotions, provoke #reactions, and create the perfect narrative. This ‘storytelling’ makes the complex seem simple, the chaotic seem controlled, and the dangerous seem inevitable. It’s a well-rehearsed play where the #audience never sees the strings pulling the action.
This #manipulation is subtle but powerful. It’s not enough to tell #people what’s happening—they need to feel it. It’s like the dramatic twists in Game of Thrones—when something unexpected happens, we don’t just accept it; we believe it, because the narrative has been built to make it seem inevitable.
The Danger of Simplified Truths
But what happens when we only get part of the story? When the media selectively picks what to show, the #context is lost. It’s like watching a superhero movie where we only see the final #battle, but not the years of struggle that led to it. A single image or a brief video clip can tell a thousand stories, but it’s only one piece of a much bigger picture. This selective framing means we’re often left with a warped version of reality—one that’s easier to digest but far from the truth.
Take the ongoing conflicts around the world. Media outlets constantly bombard us with images of #missiles and #destruction, but how often do we hear about the diplomats behind the scenes, working tirelessly for #peace? How many stories are ignored because they don’t fit the drama-driven narrative? The media loves the #spectacle, but the quiet moments of #diplomacy are too boring for headlines. We’ve become so used to the noise that we fail to notice the subtle hum of reason.
Critical Thinking Is the Key to Freedom
When media outlets dominate the conversation, it’s easy to forget that there are other ways to see the world. In Star Wars, the Rebellion fights against the #Empire’s narrative, which presents itself as the ultimate #authority. Similarly, we must challenge the narrative that media feeds us. If we don’t question the stories we’re told, we risk losing our ability to think critically. Like Neo in The Matrix, we have to decide whether we want to take the red pill and see the truth, or continue living in the comforting illusion created by the media.
#Freedom isn’t just about having #access to information—it’s about having the ability to interpret it for ourselves. Critical thinking is the only tool we have to cut through the noise. If we allow ourselves to passively #consume the news without #questioning its source or motives, we’re simply accepting a version of reality that has been carefully packaged for us.
Conclusion: Reclaiming Our Power
In the end, the media’s greatest trick is convincing us that their version of the world is the only one that matters. But just like in The Truman Show, we have the power to break out of the constructed reality and start questioning the world around us. We need to look beyond the headlines, challenge the narratives, and dig deeper into the stories that truly matter.
As Spider-Man teaches us, “With great power comes great responsibility.” The media has great power, but so do we. The question is: will we continue to let them #control the narrative, or will we take control of our own #understanding of the world?

A quotation from Henry Commager
And as for the argument that criticism [of government foreign policy] may give aid and comfort to some enemy, that is a form of blackmail unworthy of those who profess it. If it is to be accepted, we will have an end to genuine discussion of foreign policies, for it will inevitably be invoked to stop debate and criticism whenever that debate gets acrimonious or the criticism cuts too close to the bone. And to the fevered mind of the FBI, the CIA, and some Senators, criticism always gives aid and comfort to the enemy or cuts too close to the bone.

A quotation from Robert Ingersoll
The instant we admit that a book is too sacred to be doubted, or even reasoned about, we are mental serfs. It is infinitely absurd to suppose that a god would address a communication to intelligent beings, and yet make it a crime, to be punished in eternal flames, for them to use their intelligence for the purpose of understanding his communication. If we have the right to use our reason, we certainly have the right to act in accordance with it, and no god can have the right to punish us for such action.

It's not your fault if you're stuck in a small town, and seemingly the only nonbinary person there.
Your gender is real even if you're the only one who knows.
Your gender is real even if the only place you can be yourself is online.

"If any cis or questioning people in the comments are still confused why anyone would "want" (need) to consider different options, remember the context.
Most of us already DIY their mood and function with caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, paracetamol, and others.
These are all over the counter non-food substances with therapeutic and side effects.
Plus cosmetic surgeries and (unregulated) supplements for people unhappy with their ageing process. The difference here is a group of people whom we can target, attack ("justifiably", not), and scapegoat to stall for time while avoiding real causes like inequality. "

@CultureDesk This paper is super inspiring! What's shimmering in here is how much #pedagogy the art of transmitting the #understanding is fundamentally anchored in the science itself: The attained beauty would be as much aesthetics as it is a transmission power.
This supports: #Science needs to be reinvented (by #questioning, #critics-izing, and #reformulation made more beautiful) by every single scientist. Only then can it progress and can the quest for #beauty continue motivating.

Notice how explanations don’t explain anything and fail to bring an end to questioning. As children we knew this very well. Always asking ‘why?’ to every explanation and answer given. We, and by definition, the Universe, are unknowable, like a ruler trying to measure itself.

CW: Looking for open, friendly Discord channels to recommend to other trans people in need of friendship, support, and community outside the fediverse
Hey fab fedi folks :FediverseSymbol:
Per the title, we're looking for Discord channels with specific criteria to recommend to other trans people :TransHeart:
We're aware of The Orchard for anyone questioning their gender, or seeking support, community, or friendship.
Sadly, however, it's too large a server for many people and puts them off 😔
The problem is that we don't really know any other open, friendly servers to recommend to trans people. Most smaller servers tend to be invite only or age restricted (e.g., 18+; 30+ etc.), and often, despite best intentions, end up with a bias towards specific identities 🥺
To this end, do any of you know any Discord servers that:
- Are welcoming to everyone under the wide trans umbrella
- Are open (vetting on joining is fine)
- Are intersectional
- Are kind, patient, and understanding
- Offer support on trans issues
- Support common overlapping identities and support needs (e.g., mental health; neurodivergence; plurality; furry; etc.)
- Explicitly forbid transmedicalism, gatekeeping etc.
- Can cater to different age groups (by restricting sections by age etc.)
Recommendations will be very much appreciated, and boosts will be very welcome 🩷
Thank you all in advance :PleadingFaceWithRedHearts:

#VicePresident #KamalaHarris' #CodeSwitching Is #American As #ApplePie
Code switching is a common practice within the black community.
Some conservatives have claimed that this #linguisticshift was #evidence of #inauthenticity, essentially #questioning Harris’ #blackness. Their #confusion highlights the need for more #constructive #conversations on #race and #communication.

Hey non-cis folks of the fediverse :FediverseSymbol: 👋
We'd like to know which things you wish you had heard, read, seen, or been told about gender when you were younger that might have helped you to realise you weren't cis sooner :TransHeart:
The ones we wish we had been told are:
- If you want to be a girl, you can just be a girl.
- Cis boys don't feel uncomfortable in their gender and wish they could be a girl.
- Cis boys don't wish they were trans, so that they could transition too.
- Nobody else can tell you what your gender is: you have to discover it for yourself.
What would yours be?
Let's try and help a few current and future eggs together :TransButterfly:

CW: Seinfeld, unpopular opinions, posting while drinking, bisexuality, biphobia, Christofascism, questioning, thread
And I think it's sad that growing up, the only example I had of someone #questioning whether they were #queer was #Seinfeld, a show that, while I'm defending it with some #UnpopularOpinions is still deeply problematic. It's a show that, like every other show of that era, was #biphobic and participated in #BiErasure. And yet, I'm also weirdly grateful to it, because at least it was something when I had nothing, and now I can look back on that era of my life and rewatch it and realize how far I've come in my own journey.
And I also think it's sad that there really isn't more representation of characters questioning their sexual orientation, even today. I think today questioning is assumed to be something people don't do because we're all supposedly so accepting of the #LGBTQ community now, but for pretty much all of my life, I could have used some questioning representation.
