  8. Another reason to stick around until 2030 or so ... by then, it may be affordable to take a #supersonic cross-country trip. If so, today's rollout of the #X59 experimental jet by #NASA and #LockheedMartin might well be seen as a milestone. cosmiclog.com/2024/01/12/super #Aviation #Quesst

  10. @NASA Our experimental X-59 supersonic aircraft will be revealed on Friday, Jan. 12, ahead of its first @NASAAero #Quesst flights to test quiet supersonic technology.

The ceremonial rollout is an aeronautics tradition, representing years of hard work:

  14. Boom shak-a-lak: #Supersonic travel without the boom? Sonic booms were thought the inevitable result of faster-than-sound travel, and restricted #Concorde to trans-ocean routes. #Aircraft such as the X-59 pictured alter the behaviour of shock waves, preventing them combining, presumably by tweaking airflow to generate destructive interference. Gautam Shah of #NASA Langley presented the #Quesst mission at Acoustical Society of America in Nashville today. Flights over land will test the theory.
