  1. A Taste Of Things To Come

Twenty-six years ago, when the hype was building up in anticipation of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies, I first started seriously learning Quenya, and I kept it up for several years after they were all released, but all things pass with time and gradually my interests shifted to other things. Recently, after finally embracing my own neurodivergence and actually getting an autism diagnosis, I started deliberately "unmasking" as they say, and as part of this process I came to realize that I had for many years been unconsciously suppressing my love of all things Tolkien — my biggest and oldest special interest — as a way of avoiding irritating neurotypical people who thought I was weird, so I started reading some of the more recently published books that I had never gotten around to. Then, after tentatively mentioning my interests, I found myself encouraged by my friends, many of whom are also on the autistic spectrum (yes, one of them actually is obsessed with trains!), so I started learning the language again and began making these posts as a way to encourage myself to study a bit every day.

The upshot of this, and the reason that I mention it, is that until now I really haven't had any intentional direction for future posts. Now, having done some reading and studying and gotten exposure to the language again, I am starting to formulate the beginnings of a plan for the future. At the moment, having presented a smattering of nouns, I am going through the colors (which is to say, some adjectives), and after this I will introduce some other basic words and then get around to the first big verb, (to be), which I will use to start discussing verb conjugation and the basics of grammar. After that we will be able to form simple sentences using the vocabulary discussed so far and will have a foundation upon which to build further.

Tonight, though, I will leave you with a teaser of things to come, a simple sentence that I gave to some friends in Discord a bit ago as an example of the language. As the days pass and these posts continue, this sentence and it's structure will come to make sense to anyone following along with me.

Yé! Ná lómë ar eleni, Vardo annar, tintillar menelessë pella fanyar!

Lo! It is night and the stars, Varda's gifts, tremble in the heavens beyond the clouds!

Note that here I have included the plural adjectives and the adverbial form as well. Adjectives in Quenya must agree in number with the nouns they describe.

    The Tengwar
The twentyfirst letter of the tengwar is órë which was originally used for weak (untrilled), medial R, but by the third age had been replaced by rómen representing a trilled R. In one important example of tengwar writing, Tolkien used órë to represent R before a consonant, and at the ends of words, though this may have been an aesthetic choice rather than a phonetic indication. The word órë means "heart (inner mind)".

Here I have shown one of the many ways Tolkien expressed comparative and superlative forrms over the years. Unfortunately he never really settled on how these things should be done, changing the grammar many times, including in the late 1960's in the years just before his death. The forms I have given, and will continue to give, are perhaps the simplest way of doing things, but for a full discussion of the difficulties of comparison, see the Eldamo website here:

    The Tengwar
The twentieth letter of the tengwar is nwalme, originally ñwalme, which is used for the letter combination NW, originally ÑW. The word nwalme means "torment".

Here I have shown one of the many ways Tolkien expressed comparative and superlative forrms over the years. Unfortunately he never really settled on how these things should be done, changing the grammar many times, including in the late 1960's in the years just before his death. The forms I have given, and will continue to give, are perhaps the simplest way of doing things, but for a full discussion of the difficulties of comparison, see the Eldamo website here:

    queän — ten
    minquë — eleven

    nelquë — thirteen
    canquë — fourteen
    lepenquë — fifteen

    tolquë — eighteen
    neterquë — nineteen
    yuquain — twenty

In the image below where the tengwar forms of the names and digits of the numbers are shown, you will notice that queän and minquë have two representations, first as a single digit, and then as a two digit form. This is because in addition to the base ten number system we are accustomed to, the Elves also used a base 12 number system at times. In the base twelve number system the basic digits are 0 through 11. The number 12 would be written in base 12 numbers as a 1 followed by a zero, or more accurately as a zero followed by a 1 since the Elvish custom of writing multi-digit numbers is to start withe the ones place, then the twelves place, then the hundred and fourty fours place, etc. They also wrote in this order when writing base ten numbers, and the two digit representations of the numbers below follows this convention to demonstrate it. First is the ones place and then the tens place. If you wish to write proper Quenya then you should follow this convention yourself, though you can be forgiven if you want to follow the convention of real world numbers, instead.
