There is a German phrase I keep coming back to: soziale Verrohung.

Social brutality. The coarsening of society. The point where cruelty stops being shocking and starts becoming conversational.

And honestly? We are watching it happen in real time.

People aren't merely saying, “I disagree with you” anymore.
    They are saying:
    You are degenerate.
    You are vermin.
    You are unworthy of living.
    You should be killed.
You should be sent to the camps.

And increasingly, they aren't even bothering to hide behind anonymous accounts.

Full names. Real photographs. Proudly attached to it.

    That should frighten us.

Because dehumanisation is not just “strong language”. It is how cruelty becomes socially acceptable. First someone is annoying. Then disgusting. Then dangerous. Then somehow no longer quite human.

History has a rather ugly filing cabinet full of examples.

So no, I am not going to politely debate whether my friends, my community, or anyone else is sufficiently “worthy” of dignity.

Human rights are not a popularity contest.

And if your politics requires treating other human beings as disposable, perhaps the problem isn't that the rest of us need to become more tolerant.

Perhaps your politics is simply fucking monstrous.

  5. CW: CW: Fascism, racism, Islamism, white supremacy, violence

Today I was told I should leave Europe because I apparently hate white people so much.

    Why?

Because I keep fighting fascism and Nazis.

And apparently, according to this person, my great ideological failure is that I refuse to name Muslims as the “main threat.”

    Seriously?

The chap I buy my kebabs from is Muslim. The family running the grocery store across the street is Muslim.

The people who tried to beat me up in Utrecht were Czechs. The woman who recently verbally attacked me on the U-Bahn was Christian, and white.

And yes, the attacker at the Berlin CSD was an Islamist.

And that is precisely my fucking point.

    I fight fascism.

White supremacist fascism. Christian fundamentalism. Islamism. Nationalism. Authoritarianism. Whatever flavour of hatred comes crawling out from under whatever rock it has chosen to call home.

I am not going to participate in the fascist fantasy that Muslims are the enemy while white men are apparently waiting nobly in the wings to save civilisation.

    Sorry. I've met history.

I know what hateful white men are capable of when they decide that their hatred gives them permission to hurt people.

    And frankly?

I know people I would much rather stand beside.

    My kebab vendor.

That Muslim family at the grocery store.

People who simply get on with their lives, treat me like a human being, and don't require me to pass some ridiculous racial purity test before they'll show me basic decency.

So keep your fucking race-war fantasies to yourself.

I judge people by their actions.

    Actually, scratch that.

I don't collectively judge groups of people at all.

    Except fascists.

Because fascism isn't a skin colour, an ethnicity, a religion, or a continent.

    It's a choice.

And if you've chosen fascism, congratulations: you've chosen me as your problem.

I have no intention of making your life comfortable.

Protest is saying, “I don't like this.”

Resistance is saying, “This ends here.”

Protest is refusing to play along.

Resistance is making damn sure the game cannot continue.

    Protest raises a voice.

Resistance puts its shoulder against the machine and says, “No further.”

Because sometimes saying "this is wrong" is only the beginning.

Sometimes you have to become the very inconvenient little bastard who makes sure it stops.

And yes, my friends, that is rather more work than holding a sign.

It is also rather more effective.

  14. CW: CW: Fascism, political violence, historical revisionism

    Fascism never lasts.

It may swagger. It may acquire uniforms, flags, ministries, billionaires, television channels and an absolutely astonishing number of mediocre men with very strong opinions.
    But eventually, it breaks.

Because evil has terrible long-term management skills.

And then comes the most entertaining part.

The people who spent years cheering for it will suddenly develop an acute case of “Oh, I was never really one of them.”

The ones who marched will say they were merely observing.

The ones who applauded will insist they were being ironic.

The ones who spread the propaganda will suddenly discover the nuanced political thinker hiding somewhere underneath all that fascist garbage.

And the ones who demanded cruelty will solemnly announce that they always supported human rights.

    Oh, Sweetie.
    We have evidence.

    That is why we screenshot.
    Why we download.
    Why we archive videos.
Why we preserve posts, speeches, usernames, dates and declarations.

Not because we are building some little book of grudges.
Because memory is a weapon against historical laundering.

Because victims deserve the truth. And perpetrators deserve no hiding space.

    Fascism will end.
    The uniforms will come off.
    The flags will disappear.
    The statues will come down.
And suddenly everyone will have been a brave little resistance fighter all along.

    Except...
    We kept the screenshots.
    We kept the videos.
    We kept the archives.
So when the reckoning comes, and it will come, there will be nowhere for these people to hide behind “I didn't know.”

    We will know.

    History will know.

And, regrettably for the fascist revisionists, the internet has a rather better memory than they do.

    Archive everything.
    Let them lie later.
We have work to do now.

And then there is this particular person and his little entourage, using the pink triangle in the logo for their... wait for it... exclusionary British gay Nazi club.

You know, the pink triangle. The symbol Nazis forced onto gay men, cross dressers, trans people, etc. in concentration camps. The one we appropriated for Antifascist queer action.

There really is something uniquely vile about taking a symbol born from the persecution, imprisonment, torture, and murder of queer people under Nazism and proudly repurposing it for a fucking Nazi identity.

It isn't edgy. It isn't ironic. It isn't clever.

It's historical illiteracy wrapped in fascist cosplay, with a generous dollop of contempt for the people whose suffering produced the very symbol they're abusing.

Imagine being so catastrophically stupid that you manage to turn “Nazis persecuted us” into “Nazis persecuted us, therefore let's be them.”

The clown car has apparently discovered historical symbolism. 🎪

    “A Promise.”

    Don’t blink.
    Don’t flinch.
    Don’t you dare look away.

    You wanted a war?

    Here.

Here is the war you started
when you spat on the graves of the disappeared
    and called it tradition.

When you tore names off school rosters
    and laughed.

    When you cuffed children
and marched them out of their futures
    like livestock.

When you built your false god
    from the bones of those
    you deemed unworthy to live.

    You think we forgot?

You think because the photos are in black and white
    the blood dried clean?

You think because the jackboots echo
    through courtrooms now
    instead of streets
    that we won’t hear them?

    We are not your citizens.
    We are not your subjects.
    We are what you get
    when the hunted grow teeth.

    You want purity?
    We bring wickedness.

    You want silence?
    We bring sirens.

    You want obedience?
We bring the ghost of every child
you erased from census and scripture.

    We are Marsha's brick.
    We are Rosa’s refusal.
    We are the last breath
of every queer kid you drove off the edge

    and we are coming back
    with fury in our minds
    and your slogans gutted
    on the floor.

    You want law and order?
    We bring riot.

    You want peace?
Then put down your weapons first,
    your gavel,
    your border,
    your Bible.

    Put down that boot
    you keep calling “protection.”

    But you won’t, will you?

Because you were never protecting anything.
    Only hoarding power.
Only fearing what you couldn’t own.

    We see you.
    Behind every “concerned citizen,”
we see the glint of the old iron cross.
Behind every “think of the children,”
we see the ash of bookfires.
    Behind your flags
    we see the graves.

    And now you see us.

    Not one.
    Not few.
    Not meek.
    But many.
    And furious.

We are the stones you didn’t count.
The ones with nothing left to lose.
    We are the burned,
    the banned,
    the buried

    and we do not forgive.
    We do not forget.

    You want civility?
You dragged us to this altar of cruelty.
    Now watch what we do
    with the matches.

    We will light the sky
with every name you tried to unmake.
    We will flood your monuments
    with memory.
    We will raise the dead,
    in chant, in scream,
in truth tattooed across your headlines.

    You made this fire.
    Now choke on the smoke.

Because this is not a warning.
    It is a promise:

    We will not stop.
    We will not bow.
We will not bury our dead quietly.
We will not let you write the ending.

    We are the ending.

  25. CW: CW: fascism, racism, queerphobia, political violence

“Fascism is not a historical accident, but the logical continuation of liberal capitalism at the stage of monopoly.”
    - Max Horkheimer

There is something almost offensively inconvenient about Horkheimer’s sentence.

    It refuses the comforting story.

Fascism is not a monster that crawls out of the forest while respectable society watches helplessly from the window.

It does not require civilisation to suddenly disappear.

It can emerge from within existing institutions, existing hierarchies, existing economic relations.

    That is the point.

When capital concentrates, inequality deepens and economic crises become structural rather than exceptional, the question becomes increasingly unpleasant: what happens when democracy starts getting in the way of concentrated power?

    One possible answer is reform.

    Another is repression.

And fascism is, among other things, a particularly vicious political answer to that contradiction.

It preserves hierarchy by redirecting popular anger away from the structures producing insecurity and towards convenient human targets.

    The unemployed become lazy.
    The migrant becomes dangerous.
    The queer person becomes corrupting.
    The dissident becomes subversive.

    The system remains innocent.

    The victim becomes the problem.

And this is why I find the contemporary habit of treating fascism as something belonging exclusively to history so profoundly dangerous.

    Fascism rarely introduces itself as:

    Hello. I am fascism.

It tends to arrive as an administrative measure.

    A moral panic.

    A security policy.

    A campaign against “degeneracy.”

    A little restriction here.

    A little dehumanisation there.

A political movement discovers that cruelty polls well, and suddenly cruelty acquires a press office.

Horkheimer was not offering a prophecy.

He was offering a warning about structure.

And structures do not care whether we find them aesthetically unpleasant.

    They simply keep producing consequences.
