when you enter a european country and request asylum it is important that you keep some things in mind. let’s go over them.
when you apply for a visa you "pinky promise" not to apply for asylum. so theres will be a hiccup. don’t worry about it.
worry instead about your visa and route.
for now the Dublin agreement regulates which EU member state is responsible for each asylum case. if you are not careful, you might apply in e.g. Germany and promptly be deported to Bulgaria, because Germany just isn’t accepting your case.
In short: the country issuing the visa OR the country where you first evidently entered the EU (were caught) is responsible for handling your asylum application.in Austria, you go up to a police officer and say that you request asylum. if you are unlucky, they (illegally) send you away because they don’t wanna do the paperwork right now. ask them when to come back, and do that. ultimatel you will be interviewed by the police, who will not be very interested, be probably not be friendly, possibly be courteous (it happens), and then you might be detained and processed to the largest federal asylum seeker camp, Traiskirchen. They might also just tell you to show up there the next morning by yourself.
This *sucks*. Think Full Metal Jacket movie sleeping situation. you will receive a green ID card and are now processed for admission. You will already have healthcare now though. If your case falls under Dublin clauses, you could be deported to another EU country.
If everything goes well, it is just a matter of bureaucracy until you receive a white ID card which means your asylum application has been accepted by Austria.You will be sent to a smaller camp in one of the 9 counties. One day you receive a letter from an agency summoning to your asylum interview. THIS is the first time someone will listen to your actual case. It will be unpleasant, the clerk will ask traumatizing questions, often be rude and try to figure out any holes in your story in order to see if you lie. You can provide evidence.
The question is: are you a member of a social group (e.g. LGBTQ people) who are a) persecuted by the state or b) persecuted by others and the state is not protecting you from this persecution.
Is there no way to escape within your country?
Prepare your documents. Keep records. make backups. On multiple servers and devices. Send files ahead to friends abroad.Then this agency will send you their official decision. if it is positive: congratulations, you now have asylum and with that access to the Austrian job market.
If it is negative, you have the right to make an appeal to fight it in court. But let’s talk about that another time. -

Good News Friday 🥳🪩 Ein Schwuler aus dem Jemen hat beim BFA Asyl bekommen. Jemen ist eines der Länder, das die Todesstrafe für Homosexualität vorsieht.
Wir bekommen immer wieder verzweifelte Email-Anfragen, weil #LGBTIQ dringend fliehen müssen, es aber nicht schaffen. Wir hatten bisher nur 6 Geflüchtete aus Jemen, die wir unterstützt haben. Sichere Fluchtrouten retten Leben!
