  1. You can come out again. You can come out with new labels as many times as you need.

Sometimes you have to fully try something to see if it works for you.

  3. It's okay to just try things, and you can change your mind. You don't have to figure it all out first in order to make a perfect, one time coming out event.

While keeping the wellbeing of yourself and others in mind, go try it out and see if it fits you. It'll be okay.

  8. Each and every one of your labels is important.

Nonbinary, lesbian, trans, asexual, gay, any combination of those and more are all vital to understanding the beautiful phenomenon that is you.

You should never have to downplay one label for the sake of another.

  10. In case you need the reminder, just surviving is enough.

You shouldn't have to prove that you have some external meaning or value to deserve life. You shouldn't have to earn your right to live.

Just being alive is plenty for the rest of us, yes. But your life is also important because it's yours.

  12. Labels and terminology are meant to help you find freedom and community. Use them to build a great life and change them out as needed.

The only constant is you, and even you will always be changing.

  14. It's important to remember that gender and sexuality labels are not personalities.

There are gentle and sensitive masculine people (for example), as well as tough and coarse feminine individuals. One's sense of style can be influenced by their identities, but not necessarily ruled by them.

You have so much freedom in choosing labels. Don't let stereotypes scare you away from one that feels right.

  16. Finding the perfect labels can be nice, but it's not necessary.

There are plenty of people who use labels that seem conflicting. There are others who prefer general terms over precision. Some folks mix it up.

The labels you apply to yourself should improve your life, not fence it in.

  18. You can come out with labels that fit imperfectly.

Very few of us are completely certain about our labels, but it's okay to change them later.

Yes, some people might get confused. However, people are very adaptable. It's more important that you're comfortable.

  20. So, someone (or some people) have said that they won't allow you to use the labels that you've chosen.

Well, what are they going to do? Reach into your brain and make you stop identifying as you do?

Ignore them. People like that will always find something to be angry about. Go live your life instead.

  22. Don't worry too much about what others think of your labels.

Much of the infighting and discussion about who gets to use which labels in what way is restricted to the anonymity of the internet.

There are exceptions, of course, but out in the world most people are far more relaxed.

  24. It's possible to go through many labels without yourself changing fundamentally along the way.

We might have a lot more words today to describe ourselves, but none of them are perfect. "Self discovery" can be primarily a struggle with language.

Keep trying stuff out for as long as that helps you.

  26. The way you use labels will be different than how otherd use those very same labels.

You might use a set of labels that some view as incompatible. Your definition of a term (or interpretation of it) could be fundamentally opposed to how another understands it. There are possibly endless opportunities for confusion.

Labesl are as varied as those that use them, and that's a good thing. It shows that labels exist to serve you, not the other way around.

  28. It's okay to have figured things out later in life, or to still be figuring it out.

It's fine to still be experimenting well past your 30s, 60s, even 90s and beyond.

It's what life is about. As long as you're alive there will always be new questions and new adventures.

  30. No matter what steps you're taking to live as your true self, you would probably like to skip to the end right now. Most of us would rather wake up and have the coming out, label picking, changing, surgery, etc. parts magically complete.

However, this is the first time you will take these steps. You might not come out again to certain people, go through the first changes from hormones, or experience the excitement of the right label quite like this again.

As difficult as it is, these are powerful moments. Try to acknowledge the wonder in them while they last.

  32. Clearly, there are people who will use your existence for their own ends. They don't care about you. They only care about stoking their anger.

So, as much as you're able, stop caring about them! The love you cultivate for yourself is far more important.

  34. "Influencers" may seem like they speak for all lgbtq/queer people, but the only voice they have is their own.

There are many people out there busy living their lives instead of stirring up debate about who is a "real" this or a "threat" to that on the internet.

Nuance and variety are everywhere in the world. Go out and live it.

  36. People change labels all the time. It's a fact that says nothing about those labels, only that people had choices.

But you need to know about a choice to be able to pick it, which is why it's good to be open about your own journey (if you're comfortable).

There's no shame in change. Help people learn.

  40. Wearing pride colors is important, especially now.

It lets others know that you're safe. It shows the world where you stand. It makes people like us real.

You may not see the results, but your bravery will have ripples in the world.

  42. Even if you choose a well-known label, you will still have to discover how you in particular use it.

Labels help you describe yourself. They don't (and usually shouldn't) tell you how to behave.

You're free to wear them in your own way.

Some of them are divisive, while others bring us together. But it's our variety that makes us strong and is our gift to the world.

Take care of yourself when arguments surface, but also add to the chorus.

  46. It’s ok if you’re queer/lgbt and you got a “later start” than what the usual narrative implies.

Maybe you didn’t figure it all out until you were well into adulthood. Maybe you haven’t started transitioning yet due to lack of resources or uncertainty. Maybe you couldn’t date due to living in a small and dangerous town.

It’s all ok. The great thing about being queer/lgbt is that there is no one true way of living.

You’re out here sailing on an ocean of possibility. Don’t worry about sticking to someone else’s schedule. The winds will take you home in time.

  48. Take your time adjusting to any new labels for yourself.

You are in a process of tremendous growth (no matter your age) and there's no need to rush.

A sprout doesn't worry about how tall a tree it may eventually become. It's only concerns are growing new roots and one little leaf at a time.

  50. If you've come to terms with being queer or lgbtq, then I'm sure you know that there are some things that can't be changed about oneself. Among those things are the ways and the places we grew up in.

For many of us, our childhood was a place of unwilling rural isolation. This past is not something anyone can leave really behind. Even while it shrinks in the rearview mirror or is shadowed buy the walls of a new home, that place will be with you for life.

It may have left deep scars and deprived you of opportunities, but you've also proven that you're as tough as the twisted trees, bare stone, or the rippling grasses of your hometown.

That strength is beautiful, and it's a greater gift than the pain you still carry.
