I ended things last night with a partner and mate, and I think I finally saw the relationship for what it was.
We started talking about a problem they were having. They explicitly wanted my perspective, so I gave it to them. I was explaining my thoughts when they interrupted me. I asked them to let me finish, they did - and then, apparently, my crime was that I hadn't let them speak.
Except… they had. That wasn't the problem.
The problem was that my answer wasn't going where they wanted it to go.
What they actually wanted wasn't my perspective. They wanted a response that was short, convenient, and relevant to their definition of relevant.
The moment my thoughts wandered outside the narrow little circle of what directly concerned them, they became something they apparently didn't need to hear.
And I've seen this pattern before.
They weren't particularly interested in other people's experiences unless they intersected with their own. Other people's feelings, perspectives, problems, lives, they mattered largely insofar as they affected them, helped them, supported them, or did something for them.
That's a very lonely way to relate to people.
Then, in the end, they told me that I simply wasn't good at communicating, and that they pitied me for that, and they just wouldn't expect me to be useful for these things anymore.
I told her that, in all my years of relationships, friendships, teaching, mentoring, and communicating with people, they were the first person to tell me that.
Their answer?
No, apparently other people felt the same way. They just hadn't told me.
So I pointed out that they do not get to speak on behalf of people they don't even know, especially when they have no idea what these people actually think or feel.
They exploded. They said what I said was deeply offensive.
And hung up.
And honestly? That little ending rather neatly illustrated the entire problem.
I don't want to be loved for what I can provide. I don't want to be listened to only when my words are what is expected. And I certainly don't want to keep making myself smaller so someone else can remain the centre of every conversation.
I'm done.
Not because we disagreed.
Because I finally understood that there was never really much room for me in the relationship at all.

Apparently my internal clock has resigned, packed a tiny suitcase, and moved to another time zone without telling me.
Also, I noticed there are still Pride marches happening around the country this weekend, so I suppose I’ll just have to rail myself there. 🚂🏳️🌈
Because apparently my love language is public transport and queer liberation. 💕✨

So, not long ago I was intrigued by a British magazine called the New Escapologist, which is all about getting out of the ratrace, etc. Something that really resonates with me right now. So I ordered the latest issue out of curiosity.
Very good mag, but one piece really struck home, about how there's a paradox in queer life, that one often seeks to both influence the mainstream world while simultaneously seeking to withdraw from it and have one's own sphere. I was like BOOM this explains SO much.
So I purchased an online subscription (cheaper) and got into an email chat with the editor. I told him about what sold me on it...
And he is gushing with thanks! He identifies as bi/pan himself but always tries to de-code himself as queer, but now wants to elevate the queer content and out himself and be more loud. I'm like, damn, dude, GO FOR IT!
So yeah, here I am, experiencing that paradox of queer life. I try to live in my own secluded sphere, but here I am influencing the world at large. Just by being honest with someone about something I liked.

I had a moment of profound clarity a couple of hours ago, in which I saw myself and my wife from the outside:
Two girls, cuddled on the couch with one of our two cats, shopping for Polish stoneware on our phones and comparing notes.
This is who I am. This is my life.
It could probably be gayer, but for the life of me, at this moment I'm not at all sure how.
