Just two examples of what I am dealing with on that other “social” network I sadly need to be a member of.
This is gay people trying to eradicate trans people from queer history — while apparently also appointing themselves the Supreme Court of what “normal-looking” gay men and lesbians are. 🙄
And yes, history has an ugly little lesson here. In the Weimar Republic, there were gay men who were deeply attracted to nationalist and later Nazi ideology, including people who were quite happy to distinguish themselves from the “wrong sort” of queer people. Respectability, conformity and throwing other queer people under the bus did not make them safe. It did not save them.
So when I see queer people trying to scrub trans people out of Stonewall, Pride and the history of our liberation, I pay attention.
Because this isn't merely about the past.
They want to erase us from history because they want to erase us from reality.
And finally, can we talk about the “kiddo”, “child”, “babe” routine?
A grown man disagreeing with a grown person and immediately reaching for infantilising language to establish dominance is not exactly a revolutionary new contribution to human civilisation.
Isn't that just typical fucking male behaviour? 🙃

Today the parade rolls through both the cities I call home. And of all the enemies I've managed to survive, bigots, bureaucrats, social expectations, and my own parents, the one thing that nearly keeps me away is... my foot.

Never mind.
If I have to hobble, I'll hobble. If I have to limp, I'll limp. You'd have to do a lot more than annoy one rebellious little foot to keep me away from Pride.
After all, society couldn't crush the queer out of me.
My parents couldn't crush the queer out of me.
And our community did the exact opposite: it gave me the courage to become myself.Queer.
Enby.
Proud.
Still standing. Mostly.So if you see someone in platform Mary Janes, rainbow gear, purple socks and stuff, and an expression that says, "Yes, this hurts. No, I'm not leaving," come and say hello.
Because we are still here.
And we will not go gentle into that good night they want for us.

Queer and, especially, trans people, experience higher rates of poverty and unemployment, due to workplace discrimination and breakdown of family ties, amongst other things, but are those who grew up with more and lost it (downward mobility) the same as those who didn’t have much to begin with?
Are you one of those working class fem/butch dykes Joan Nestle and Leslie Feinberg wrote about (or dream about being a part of that scene)?
Do your BDSM practices include regular household items or toys you made yourself because you don’t have the money to splurge at a sex shop?
Do you not have a place to take sex partners to since all the dark rooms closed down in your town and the gay bar is now a show for straight women on hen dos?
Are you constantly torn over accepting or turning down requests to perform in full drag for a pittance because maybe some money is better than nothing?
Have you or your friends been sued by a mainstream (L)G(BT) charity for denouncing their dodgy practices?
Some of these are oddly specific, I know. You don’t have to relate to any of these. Any submission from working class and poor queers will be considered.

Blu, who recently co-edited "Be Gay, Do Crime," an anthology from PM Press, will provide a short talk about the history of radical queer resistance and what it means for us in this particular historical moment. The presentation will be followed by a discussion of the communities boldly rising to challenge capitalism, white supremacy, and authoritarianism. This opening session will be followed by the bookfair's opening night potluck, so bring a dish if you're able (vegan and gluten-free preferred).

CW: transphobia; on how oppression works (example: queerphobia)
I guess this is a good time to finally tell that story that (because it illustrates it so perfectly) burned itself into my brain of one time where I was quite transphobic:
When it happened I was still pre-coming out as transfemale, and an older relative of mine causally asked whether I ever thought about how it was living as the other gender and whether that might be better. Me – not wanting to come out and admitting that yes, I did think a lot about it – immediately shut it down, saying that it was "impossible" to know something like that and it therefore was pointless to think about it. It is of course very much not pointless to think about it (after all, this is what discovering that one is trans is), so what I was saying was very transphobic and – if she were trans (which – now that I had some conversations with her about it as I'm now out – I don't think) – would have severely stunted her self-realisation progression.
So for the price of being transphobic (telling someone that there are no trans people) I – a trans person – was able to get some power (able to choose when I was coming out).

CW: on how oppression works (example: queerphobia)
Queerphobia (like any other oppression) is a faustian pact, it's an entire system designed to tempt people into using it for some short-term power reward, but by that strengthening the oppressive system and with it actually taking long-term power away from you (which ironically further incentives using it to get some of the power "back"). That's why respectability politics is so alluring: You can (by being queerphobia) use that short-term power to help some (e.g.) queer person (like yourself), which makes it seem like you are dismantling queerphobia, but you actually are perpetuating it.

I know that respectability politics is evil and I don't want to engage in it, but it is so alluring that I can't help but sometimes low-key get convinced of it, so does anyone have any resources proving undoubtably that it's just harmful?
