@rwg bueno, no sé de donde soy 😅 pero he vivido los últimos 8 años en #peru pienso en castellano y hablo castellano con mi esposa e hijos (a veces con algunas palabras del #quechua o con mis hijos algo de #alemán). Pero nací en #alemania de padres alemanes (aunque mi padre creció en Perú también). No sé si esto cuenta. De cualquier manera me siento extranjero cuando visite a Europa. Y de la parte académica, como defines académico?

But, of course, the #Quechua are far from the only people to attach significance to the winter solstice. Germanic peoples had #Jule; just as Inti Raymi traditions transferred to St. John's Eve, so too most of Jule was attached to #Christmas when the early Germanic peoples converted to Christianity.

The Romans had #Saturnalia, but that fell a few days before the solstice. There was also #SolInvictus, but that was mostly a #pagan attempt to coöpt Christmas.

For the #Quechua (AKA #Inca or #Inka) people, the winter solstice was the time of #IntiRaymi, traditionally the biggest celebration of the year. It was the darkest time of year, which meant that it was about to get brighter, sunnier, and warmer. This was all tied to the rebirth of #Inti, the god of the sun, and lasted for nine days before the Spanish banned it.

The earliest #Roman calendar is traditionally said to have been invented by King #Romulus himself. Like many ancient #calendars, it attempted to reconcile the movements of the #sun and the #moon. However, while the #Mesopotamians, #Indians, #Chinese, and #Muisca had long since worked out systems of adding extra months while the #Egyptians, #Iranians, #Mesoamericans, and #Quechua decided to disregard and moon and just use the sun, the early Romans did a little work and then threwe up their hands.
